Man, the Lions are having a very good offseason heading into a very deep draft. Have to like their moves for a team trying to change it's image and culture. Corey Williams, Kyle VandenBosch, Shaun Hill, and Nate Burelson all bring solid production and decent leadership. Look for Okung in the first round and then a heavy dose of defense for this team in the draft.

Shaun Hill would've fit our system really well IMO but SF were never going to trade him to us.

And a water cooler to be named later.

Can't believe they got a pick for a guy who is so-so at best and everyone knows will be released in the coming weeks.

Shaun Hill is totally worth a 7th round pick. He has started 16 games in his NFL career, is 29 years old, has a 61.7 completion %, 23/11 TD to INT ratio, and is 10-6 in his career with the crappy 49ers. What is not to like about this?

He can't complete a pass over 15 yards. I live in Niner country and seen the guy play. And the point is why offer a pick when he could be had for free in a month? He is an average backup at best.

Which is all you want out of your backup for a young QB. Also, you don't have to bid against any other teams for his services. No matter how he plays the game, the Lions now have a vet backup QB with a plus td/int ratio and an above .500 wining record who did all of this on a terrible team.

If he can squeak out 10 wins with the 49ers over the past 3 seasons, he can probably play solid football on an offense with Calvin Johnson if Stafford goes down.

Should be an early 7th round pick as well. Hell, that's almost as good as a late 6th...:D

Totally understand why you would trade a pick for a guy released. I guess I just don't see why I would trade a pick for THAT guy. He is expensive (salary could hit 4 million with incentives) for a backup & what he can produce. I don't see him much better than the other vet QBs out there that would come without draft compensation. At this point he is surviving off of his stretch of games at the end of 2008.

Smart move by the whiners; it ensures he does not land in the NFC West, which I clearly believe would've happened. He is a Quality backup and I would be happy to have him as a backup here.

Don't you think that if they thought he was enough of a threat to not want to have him in thier own division, they would have just kept him? It's not like they still have quality QBs on their roster now....

I figured blohard would have chimmed in by now.

He probably dove off the Golden Gate Bridge with weights chained to his ankles because he knows how bad Alex Smith is :D I wish nothing but the best for blowhard...not!!!!!!!!

Are you sure not confusing Hill with Alex Smith? Because that description fit Smith to a tee as well.

You obviously know nothing about our team. Watch this video and tell me if Alex has a weak arm. His arm is good to very good and is easily better than Matt Leinart's.

Back to the topic at hands, I am glad that Shaun Hill did not land with any team in the NFC West. He was our starter for quite a while and is good for a few secrets. He's a capable backup that has good leadership qualities. The team seemed to rally around him when we were in desperation mode and we actually came up with a few wins.

Yeah, I see constantly underthrown deep balls. You must be another one of those delusional 49er fans who think Alex Smith is a great QB.

Is it just me, or does Michael Crabtree look really slow? Man, I can't believe that he was that hyped.

He looks like a smaller Keyshawn Johnson. And I don't mean that as a compliment, he honestly looks like a little bit better Frank Sanders. I mean, he gets like 20 yards of YAC/RAC over the course of the ENTIRE video. We used to criticized Larry Fitz for the same thing, but at least Fitz is an animal on jump balls.

Alex Smith's problem isn't arm strength, it's accuracy.

Michael Crabtree will never be confused with DeSean Jackson, but he does have adequate speed for the NFL; the reason he might seem slow is due to his having to adjust to poorly thrown balls. Rewatch the video - how many times does he have to jump or slow down to get to the ball? That goes back to Alex's inability to put the ball exactly where it needs to be. What will separate Crabtree from the average WR is his great agility, excellent route running, and the ability to catch a football.

Meh, I just don't see top 10 pick talent when I watch him. Quite a few of those catches elite receivers would've gained 10 or more yards.

And all those abilities you listed are (other than great agility) are possesion receiver traits, which I assert he will never be more than a good #1 but never will be a gamebreaker.

I thought he did a pretty good job at maximizing YAC - again, it's hard to get YAC when one has to break off their route to make the catch. He averaged 4.0 YAC - on par with Boldin, Sidney Rice, TO and Hines Ward, and approximately a yard per better than Larry Fitzgerald, TJ Houshmandazdeh, Steve Breaston, and Chad Ochocinco. Not bad for a rookie who missed all of training camp and the first 5 games of the season.
