My 10 year old son started football last week and yesterday was his day in pads. I told him that he has to know in his head that he can take down anyone while he is in his pads. Well in the first tackling drills he drilled every kid that he went against. That also include lifting the biggest kid on the team off the ground and slamming him in to the ground. He caused 3 fumbles and then jumped on the ball all 3 times.

He picked his number last week and was able to get 42. He wants to be a linebacker.

I about had a tear in my eye.

We're insane when it comes to football. Starting in August when its 95-100+ degrees outside. It was 103 degrees in Austin yesterday and the little guys were out there in full pads. That's crazy.

Oh well it'll make 'em tough.

As long as you keep them hydrated they will be good and it will make them tough. My kid drinks a gallon a day of water and the coaches are really good about carrying water bottles on them during every drill.

Oooooh!! I can't wait until my kid is taking people down. He's three and lines up like a DE and bum rushes us...he has a blast.

Have fun and enjoy your kid's exploits on the field...it means so much to a kid when your dad is there at your games and such.

Good stuff! If he ever gets a little gun shy or starts to struggle, just tell him the opppostion are UofA fans. That should do the trick!

Congrats - and keep him having fun!

My family comes from St. Loius (back in the Cardinals days), but I grew up in Europe. I re-discovered American football when my son was about two and by the time he wa three he could throw a spiral! (honest!) Here in Zurich they have an under-13 flag football team and he's been playing since he was six - and I've ended up helping to coach and will probably join a flagfootball team myself. It's been a great ride, and I wouldn't trade a minute of our hared obsession for the world.

I am kind of glad that we live in Switzerland, though. There's a fun amature league here but no one is dumb enough to think they could grow up and become a superstar. We watch the pros - and play for fun.

That said, I wish I could ive Evan a chance to go to a real football camp in the US. Don't some of the NFL teams organize kids camps??

Peace,

Mike

Congrats!

My son is 9 and is in his second year. Practice started last week with full contact allowed as of a week ago. He's a force at OT and plays like a wildman at DT. I love coaching the backfield, but sometimes find myself just watching him go. Enjoy it! These are the times you'll always remember.
