Now I kind of wish the FO had listened to Chopper last offseason:

http://grantland.com/the-triangle/nfl-week-4-coaches-marvin-lewis-chip-kelly-bruce-arians/

Let me tell you a story. During my year living in Vegas, I played a fair amount of poker. One day, I was playing at Mandalay Bay and talking to the guy next to me, who eventually revealed he had played wideout on the same junior college team (Santa Monica College) as Smith and Chad Johnson, then Chad Ochocinco. Somebody at the table asked him about Ochocinco and he had nothing but hilarious stories to tell about Ochocinco goofing around and having fun.

I asked him about Smith, though, and the man’s brow immediately furrowed. His smile disappeared. He told me a story of getting into an argument with Smith over some long-forgotten situation where he was in the right. The poker player was a younger man then, and as many of us were as young men, he got very obstinate about being in the right and was willing to turn an otherwise irrelevant slight into a fight. He got to the point where he was about ready to throw down … at which point Smith escalated the tension about 10 levels beyond anything my man could have ever generated at his most wronged. He looked into Smith’s eyes and saw a rage he could never hope to match. In sheer self-preservation mode, he apologized to Smith and got as far away as possible. It was a lot like the high school bully scene from Louie, only with one Steve Smith instead of a bunch of high schoolers.

As he finished the story, I laughed in support of the guy’s situation and said knowingly, “I guess you don’t **** with Steve Smith.” He looked at me with great sincerity, as if to warn me out of even the slightest possible hint of serious interest in the pursuit, and said very clearly: “Do not *mess* with Steve Smith.”

The Panthers *mess*ed with Steve Smith.

Just relayed that story to a buddy, does not surprise me at all. Have always loved smitty and I had a feeling last year in Carolina had more to do with their offense and not SS's abilities. He almost always ate our defense for lunch when we played Carolina. He's got a chip on his shoulder and most definitely plays like it, don't think I've seen a more consistently fired up player than him after he makes plays.

Sounds like typical little man syndrome. Smith would have benefitted from a butt kicking in his formative years maybe?

Just now had a chance to read this. Thanks for sharing. I know your point was about Steve Smith but had to throw this out there:

Arians was hired as head coach in Arizona, where he has gone 13-6 despite playing in arguably football’s toughest division. He is the only coach in the league to take a game from Russell Wilson in Seattle, and he’s won with the combination of Carson Palmer and Drew Stanton at quarterback. A guy who wasn’t good enough to be an offensive coordinator three years ago was Coach of the Year in 2012, a viable candidate in 2013, and probably the front-runner through three weeks in 2014.

Go Big Red baby!!!!

As far as him needing a butt kicking you better believe Steve Smith has been in plenty of fights. Ive always heard those small guys in the NFL are by far the toughest. They have to work twice as hard to get there and in a sport like football that attitude is needed.

A lot of players talk about respect, and demanding it. A lot of people talk about the fight in the dog being more important that size of the dog. Steve Smith is this guy. You want to talk about a guy I would take into a dark alley to get my back, Steve Smith is that guy.

He has always been a more explosive Boldin. He is a beast down the field, and literally fights for every ball. He is accountable, he is a professional, and he personally helped Cam Newton mature faster than he probably would have.

I am a huge believer in Steve Smith as a football player, and think he is the most underrated WR in the NFL over the past 10 years. Beast.

From Peter King's MMQB:

Smith has had three 100-yard receiving games in his first four as a Raven. He’s on pace to catch 100 balls for 1,716 yards, which is fairly insane considering that in his last 18 games in Charlotte, Smith never had a 75-yard game, never mind 100. On Sunday, he said he got emotional only once. It came on his first catch of the day. If you saw the game, you saw something a little strange. Smith caught a pass near the line of scrimmage, looked and saw number 41, former Saints safety Roman Harper, in coverage, and slowed a bit. Then he creamed Harper with a stiff-arm. “I slowed down so I could stiff-arm him,’’ said Smith. The two men faced each other twice a year in the NFC South, and Smith carried a long memory from what he considered a cheap shot by Harper. He said he heard “through the grapevine” that Harper wasn’t sorry for the hit. And so if he had the chance Sunday, he was going to deliver a message. And there it was.
