Kenny Gajewski called himself a “Positive Perry,” but the Cowgirls coach had trouble maintaining that persona after OU run-ruled OSU 11-3 Wednesday night at Devon Park.

Gajewski was downright frustrated.

“We can’t keep saying, ‘Here it goes again.’ We’ve got to find a way to get tougher, and we’ve got to find a way to dig in and go,” Gajewski said. “That’s what this team is lacking right now. It’s just lacking that last little toughness piece to get us through.”

While Gajewski and the Cowgirls left Oklahoma City on Wednesday still searching for answers, Patty Gasso and the Sooners relished in the moment, having just aced a tough mid-week test.

Gasso said the win was OU’s best of the season.

The Sooners trailed 3-0 before rattling off 11 unanswered runs. Sam Landry settled in, outpitching OSU ace Ruby Meylan.

Kasidi Pickering hit her team-leading 12th home run out of the leadoff spot while Maya Bland homered from the No. 9 hole.

“I am so fired up about this, because I think that’s what we needed,” Gasso said. “This team’s got a really incredible culture around it … This is the best time I’ve seen them have in a game. They were determined. And the experience is just phenomenal.”

Gasso and Gajewski’s postgame moods were in sharp contrast, which, you know, is to be expected after a Bedlam blowout. But the sentiments of the two coaches were also reflective of where each of their squads stand.

OU (35-3) is right where it expected to be. A five-peat is far off, yet still within reach — a major feat considering the historic class OU graduated.

OSU (23-11), meanwhile, has underachieved. The Cowgirls are an NCAA Tournament team, but a sixth-straight trip to the Women’s College World Series is a distant dream. At this point, hosting a regional should be the goal. And then the Cowgirls can go from there.

“We just haven’t played our best yet,” Gajewski said. “It’s frustrating, because we think it’s there, we know it’s there, we’ve seen it there, but we just haven’t done it enough.”

Contrast that with Positive Patty.

“I think everybody feels really good about what we did,” Gasso said.
