NORMAN — That OU had a size advantage in Saturday’s NCAA Tournament opener against Florida Gulf Coast was known.
All five of the Sooners’ starters were taller than any of the Eagles’ starters and the 6-foot-4 Raegan Beers and 6-foot Skylar Vann give OU a strong interior presence.
But OU took advantage of that to dominate the glass in historical fashion en route to the Sooners' 81-58 win.
The Sooners finished with 72 rebounds, breaking the NCAA Tournament record of 69.
“Lot of missed shots,” Sooners coach Jennie Baranczyk said, smiling, when asked how her team was able to set the record. “... It was a game of pace. There was part of that where both teams are really getting up and down.
“The 23 offensive rebounds means we missed quite a few but at least we were there to cover them up.”

The teams combined for 104 missed field goals as OU won the rebounding battle by 37.
Beers led the Sooners with a season-high 18 rebounds while Sahara Williams added 10 and Vann nine.
OU’s 23 offensive rebounds led to 27 second-chance points. Seven of Vann’s rebounds came on the offensive end.
The previous record was held by both UConn in 2018 and South Carolina in 2022.
