Why would it have costed us a 1st to move up three spots? Buffalo would’ve rather moved back 3 spots and taken a 2nd+ rather than moving to #27 and picking up an extra 1st, IMO.

If we were giving up a first we’re jumping 6-7 spots into the top-10.

Why, as a GM, would you take a 2nd over a 1st? Even that year’s 2nd would be overpaying for that move. But a first rounder is always going to be peak value. Especially for Cleveland, who ended up with a top 5 pick from Houston.

You take the 1st every time, especially if you have a pretty good feeling you’re going to keep your job the next year.

I can’t remember my pre-draft take on Mahomes but I loved Watson and hated Trubisky. FWIW Trubisky, like Murray, only started for year (with some scattered starts before his last year in college) really took a big leap in their 2nd NFL season. Mayfield, Mahomes and Watson were the real deal right away but they had multiple seasons starting in college. They were more equipped to handle it right away.

You’d think BA would’ve been much higher on Mahomes than Watson due to size and arm. With Carson on his last leg it’s unforgivable they weren’t more aggressive in a strong QB draft.

I wanted Mahomes so bad in that draft I was screaming at the tv when the Chiefs moved up to grab him.

It’s debatable from Buffalo’s perspective. Cleveland definitely made out better value wise even if you throw out the fact they received a top-5 pick the following year while Buffalo’s pick via-KC was in the 20’s.

So hypothetically say we give Buffalo our 2nd. They’d have the #13 and #45 pick in 2017 instead of the #27/#91in 2017 and #22 in 2018. Value wise it’s the latter but it would’ve depended on their board and how high they were on guys in our area.

Presumably not enough to not be willing to move back that far.

Again, just because we didn't end up there doesn't mean we didn't try.

I cannot blame Keim for balking at a 1st or second to move 3 spots. It's way off the value chart. Keep in mind the Chiefs ALSO threw in a 3rd round pick. We'd have had to give up our second and third to come close to that offer. Not good in a season where we're trying for a last gasp for a SB.

Now, then we didn't know what Mahomes would become.

It’s definitely easier to criticize after what those QB’s have become but we should’ve taken matters into our own hands considering Cleveland was picking before us and needed a QB (even though they didn’t take one).

To me, it's apparent the Cardinals had two guys they were excited about at #13, and couldn't fathom a point where the Chiefs moved up that far to snag Mahomes at #10, which had to create some panic, knowing we thought the Browns would take someone. Then the Texans had two picks to beat us out with a wildly aggressive offer.

Knowing what we know, I wish we had done it, but the situation was wildly out of Keim's control to make a smart football decision.

I agree with your post. I'm not sure Reid is given enough credit when it comes to QB's. I think he got more out of McNabb than people realize. I'm not sure McNabb was ever a top flight thrower of the football. In the NFC Championship game back in 2008, McNabb threw some ugly passes that a more accurate passer would not have missed. I think Mahomes is great, but adding Reid to the equation has made him that much better.

However, the contract is structured in a way that will create dead money against the salary cap in 2020 as a way to give the Cardinals a couple of extra million in cap space this year.

The dummy year is something the Cardinals have done on a few contracts. They added two voided years to quarterback Mike Glennon’s contract last year. They made Mike Iupati’s 2019 year void and also did it with Carson Palmer’s contract as well.

The issue is that general manager Steve Keim has said multiple times he wants to manage dead money because it hurts a team’s salary cap situation. The Cardinals have consistently been one of the league’s leaders the last three years in dead money.

Maybe they need the extra $2 million this year, but essentially Keim is again kicking the can into the future.

A little insight into the deeper reasoning why our dead cap space is such an issue.

It's awful, but I can't blame a guy doing anything to save his job punting the remainder of the blame onto his eventual successor.

Most of us, if we were making millions of dollars a year, likely to lose or jobs soon, and able to bamboozle our way into another year or two by spending our boss's money or shifting agreements, would probably do the same.

That's a really negative way to put the concept of "do whatever you can to make more money," but you can't blame someone for trying to keep their job. A year or two of work for Keim is money most of us can only dream of... he's probably well set to retire if he needed to.

Meh. Again, I think we WERE aggressive but couldn’t possibly drop a first round pick to move up three spots. That’s unprecedented in the top 5, much less 10-15.

So instead we waste a first round pick on Reddick.

You would think that the guy driving a Bentley with a toupe smoking a cigar down Scottsdale Road would care. But apparently they don’t. Too busy drinks martinis at Bourbone and Bone. Fire Keim and get a new Owner for the Suns

It's a bad pick, but you can't say that it would have been smart to move up, either.

Keep in mind it was rumored that just a year prior we were about to "call our shot" on Paxton Lynch.

I'm not exactly a Keim fan, but he gets a pass on this one, things were out of his hands.

Over in the sense that we shouldn't realistically expect playoffs? Sure, but this year was always about the development of the young players and the team as a whole.

As long as the team is showing progress throughout the season, especially Kyler and Kliff, than this season will have been what it needed to be.

When I had gone to bed I thought exactly what you just wrote and was like “oh man, why didn’t I mention that”.

The post I answered to more than implied (at least I thought) that the season would be over if they did not have a chance to reach the playoffs.

I completely agree with you.

I think people are really forgetting or glossing over the general mood at that draft class's QBs because in the present, Watson and Mahomes are really good, with Trubisky at least solid.

And while you are saying that, you are also saying that half the board thought something else. It is you looking in hindsight.

No, I wanted Watson or Mahomes, and you are welcome to go back and find my posts from back them. I even selected Watson in the last mock draft I participated in not long before the actual draft.

Im sorry was referring to the threads on this board I know of few(if any) actual web sites although a lot saod we should be better hopefully they are right (doesnt look to good right now) IMHO
Going up to last week this team has been far more entertaining and exciting for most from what I've seen on here. One game doesn't make a season. Imho

The huge knock on Keim in that draft is just that, a lack of taking matters into his own hands. He's left with the "Golly gee, we never thought a team would jump in front of us like that" red-faced response. And it's a knock on him for years surrounding that: being reactive rather than proactive in getting a QBOF. I mean, who would think a team would jump up in front of you for a QBOF? A smart team with a smart GM. In other words, not Keim!

my knock on him and the FO that draft was that they told anyone that would listen that it was a good year to take a QB

dont know if shutting up that would have changed anything, but the Texans and the Chiefs moved like they knew they had to get ahead of the Cardinals

I, along with every poster, love Larry Fitzgerald. But it can be argued that the Big Bucks we are paying him, has kept us from pursuing FA's that might have improved the roster more than Larry. And now that he has gotten off to a very good start, I'm guessing he'll be back next season. Any chance he'll give us a Tom Brady discount?
He has given us a home town discount. I don’t think he is even in the top 15 salaried wr’s. It would kill me to see Fitz in a different uniform. He is not the one strapping this team. It’s Bradford and Glennon money. Probably the dumbest free agent signings in Cardinal history. Can you imagine the holes we could fill with the 40 m spent on those two guys?
