Bell has now had six consecutive appearances without giving up a run which is good but Hernandez and Putz have been truly awful so far this year.

Why is Putz the closer?!?!

This guy has been suspect every since he got here. He's had a few nice streaks but how many times has he struggled? Now Gison is saying he needs to get his splitter right but we're keepin him as closer???

Nice win though. IMO they should make Didi the closer. :sarcasm: Let him play SS until the 9th then move him to the mound. I bet he can trow a faster fastball than anybody in our pen and you know he has more balls than the entire lot.

Ian finally comes through and the BP f's it up for him.

Glad we won, but this reeks of 2010.

Putz is the king of the locker room, a legit team leader. Pushing him out of the closer role would have unusual ramifications. As long as they believe whatever's wrong with him can be fixed, he'll be the guy. Until he's not.

I can't get too worried about bullpens in April (or even May). If it's still a mess by the All-Star break, that's when you panic. There's no reason to think this BP can't be very good.

Well, other than the 7 blown saves so far I guess.

Saw highlights of today's win and even though Hernandez blew the save in the 9th, the pitch he threw that went for a homer was a good pitch. The guy basically took a 9-iron swing to tie the game.

On a related but tangential note, I wish baseball would change the rule and not allow a pitcher who blows a save to get a win. I think it should go to the pitcher whose win he blew.

David always seems to need 10-12 pitches until his fastball heats up, it'll jump from 92 to 95-96.

He and JJ are very similar in that all you need to know about the outing is to watch their first off speed pitch (in JJ's case, the splitter). If JJ spikes it into the dirt, he's in trouble. If David's first breaking pitch is flat, he's in trouble.

They'll both attempt it a few more times, if they can't find it they obviously rely solely on the location of their fastball.

ML hitters know this as well as anybody and just sit on a mistake. For some stupid reason JJ has not been able to command his splitter more often than not this year. He did the same thing early on last year.

When David can command both he is absolutely filthy. A joy to watch.

Yep. If people remember, Putz was awful to start the year last year, then settled down and was great. Plenty of good pitchers in the bullpen, way too early to panic.
