The Phoenix Coyotes are close to signing Owen Nolan to a one-year contract, Sportsnet has learned, following extensive testing to the 34-year old forward's health.

After undergoing several MRIs and on-ice testing, the former all-star winger and Canadian Olympic Gold medalist convinced Coyotes management that he still has the passion to continue his career and play at a high level again.

Nolan's summer training regime -- which included two on-ice sessions a day -- has dropped Nolan's weight down to 205-lbs and, more importantly, has left the winger's body pain free.

If the Coyotes are going to try and plug holes with reclaimation projects like Roenick and Nolan, at least they are being smart about it by running through extensive tests. Owen Nolan is 34 years old, has never played a full 82 games, and hasnt played at all since the 03-04 season. However, if it is true that he has rededicated himself and is now pain free, the Coyotes may have a steal on their hands. There isn't a whole lot of risk here, so it doesn't really hurt to try.

I guess a one year deal would be ok. I'm not sure if they can make it incentive-laden or not, but I hope so.

I don't want another Nedved or Hull. :(

Unfortunately, I don't think Nolan qualifies for an incentive-laden contract.

Is that because of his time in the league? I don't really know the rules on this, but I remember this happening in the NFL. Guys would be willing to play for less than the minimum, but couldn't do so because of the players' union deal.

[FONT=Arial, Helvetica]Players 35 and older as of June 30 in the League Year that they sign a contract may earn performance bonuses, as well as players with 400 or more games played and who spent 100 or more days on injured reserve in the last year of their most recent contract; however, in these two cases, performance bonuses are only allowed for 1-year contracts.

As far as I know, he doesn't meet one of those conditions.

According to TSN, the team is still waiting for the results of the last batch of tests (which have been going on for the last three weeks) and that the official announcement will be made tomorrow if all goes to plan. I find it a bit strange that they went for Nolan when guys like JP Dumont are still out there for roughly the same cost, but it could pay off if he returns to form.

LOL.

If they brought all of the 1980s Oilers out of retirement, they could still probably beat a bunch of teams.

TSN says its a one year deal for $1.25M, making him one of the lowest paid players on the team. That's a pretty good deal.

The Phoenix Coyotes have signed right wing Owen Nolan to a one-year contract.

“A healthy Owen Nolan can help our hockey club,” said Barnett. “After considerable due diligence, we’ve found his injuries to be well healed. He’s fit, focused and anxious to get back battling on NHL ice.”

“Owen is one of the league’s premier power forwards,” said Coyotes managing partner/head coach Wayne Gretzky. “His size, strength, goal-scoring ability and leadership will be a big asset to our team.”

How about Gretzky? If he suited up just one game, the hockey world would go nuts!!

I don't think too badly of this deal. It's not a bank breaker contract, so if Nolan stinks it's not going to kill them.

Coyotes add 2 #1 overall draft picks this offseason: Nolan (1990) and Jovanovski (1994).

Other high picks include Ricci (1990, 4th), Doan (1995, 7th), and Roenick (1998, 8th).

I took a look at the 1990 Entry Draft. There is some irony there . . .

1. Quebec, Owen Nolan
2. Vancouver, Petr Nedved
3. Detroit, Keith Primeau
4. Philadelphia, Mike Ricci
5. Pittsburgh, Jaromir Jagr
