Owners to vote on onside-kick alternative

The proposal calls for teams to get the option, a maximum of once per game during the fourth quarter only, of foregoing a kickoff and instead attempting to remain on offense following a score by converting what would essentially be a fourth-and-15 play from its own 35-yard line.

If the play is converted, the team keeps possession. If the attempt fails, the other team takes over possession.

The owners still have to vote this week after the rule is presented to them. But with only one no vote from the committee, there's a good chance that it could pass.

What the hell kind of BS rule is that? At least the onside kick has some sort of grounding in the traditions of the game, not that I know what they are.

Here's a hint: If your new rule has all sorts of weird subclauses about when and how often a team is able to take advantage of it, that's a sign that it is a bad idea. The whole point of a game played with 60 minutes or 9 innings is that action that takes place in the early stages is just as important as action that takes place at the end. This is pandering made-for-TV nonsense.

They said on NFL Network earlier that it only had one dissenting vote in the competition committee… They believed had a good chance to pass with the owners so we shall see..

I think in this case you have to try the old-fashioned onside kick just like it's always been.

I like that the league is thinking about rules, because in some areas it's much needed. I don't know what I should think of this particular rule though. If it makes games more exciting, why not.

I like that the league is thinking about rules, because in some areas it's much needed. I don't know what I should think of this particular rule though. If it makes games more exciting, why not.

What would be exciting is if they had the amount of tries unlimited in the 4th qtr.

That's total BS!! I can see the Cardinals losing another 2-3 games every year because of this crap. So, essentially, you can be outplayed an entire game, and still pull games out of your a$$. I can see teams that get gift calls (Stealers, Cowboys, Pats) benefitting tremendously from this. This is a rich get richer & poor get poorer scenario.

Onside kick is perfect. Huge gamble with a 10% success rate, but enormous benefit

Yeah, I can totally imagine the Card's defense getting a stop in one of these situations and then, wait, a flag on the play for defensive holding or roughing the qb.

Oh man, we would NEVER stop a 4th and 15. The Cardinals give away first downs on those type plays like a pamphlet guy in front of a NY strip joint.

It seems they're trying to adopt the AAF model. The kicker is there for FG's only. They don't even kick extra points. That said, the NFL is going to bleed viewers the more the F with the game. While I dig trying to keep players safe, this is tackle football and not tiddly winks. What's next, rolling out these?

For everyone who says if it ain’t broke don’t fix it look at baseball. This is what everyone was saying in the 90’s through current day. You know what’s happening to baseball? It’s dying. If you don’t keep reinventing with the times and make things faster and more exciting for upcoming generations football 15 years from now will be where baseball is. Basketball will be the #1 sport in the country. It is already slightly trending that way with younger generations. It’s faster more action and lots of highlights with little down time.

The current rules have made on-side kicks almost impossible to convert, but this rule idea is horrible. I'd much rather see them change the rule to allow more than 5 men on either side of the ball if a kick-off travels less than 20 yards.
