The streak is over.
With the 23rd pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers selected wide receiver Matthew Golden from Texas. It marked the first time since 2002 that the Packers drafted a wide receiver in the first round. Given the long-term outlook of Green Bay’s receiving corps, the decision to break the streak and invest in a top-tier wideout was a logical step toward strengthening the offense.
Golden joins a receiver corps without a clear number-one option, giving him the chance to claim that spot by the end of the 2025 season. His podium moment after being drafted was one of the most exciting of Day 1, and he is eager to show Jordan Love that he can be a reliable target on the field.

“Talented quarterback, can get out the pocket and make plays and damn sure can throw the ball,” Golden said about Love. “I’m letting him know as soon as I see him, ‘Man, you got a reliable target. You can trust me.’”
Last season, Golden logged 175 snaps in the slot and 664 as an outside receiver. He ran an unofficial 4.29 in the 40-yard dash at the NFL combine. Golden has the speed to give Green Bay a vertical stretch-the-field element until Christian Watson recovers from a torn ACL.
Golden is the first Longhorn drafted by the Packers since Jermichael Finley in the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian shared his thoughts on Green Bay's decision to pick the speedster, emphasizing Golden's potential to make an immediate impact with his skill set.
He's a fantastic player. Matt showed everyone how fast he was with that 40 time, but his short area quickness, how he gets in and out of breaks makes him truly elite. He has extremely strong hands, makes contested catches, can do it at all three levels – whether it's the short game, the intermediate, the deep balls – and he's at his best in the most critical moments. You top that off with the blue-collar attitude he has, the fact that he's a great teammate who you can really count on day in and day out, that's what really separates him. He works, he's no nonsense, he's tough and does the dirty work blocking linebackers, safeties and event defensive ends. All in all, I think this guy is getting all that he deserves, and Green Bay is going to love him.
The Packers have no limits on how they can use him. Whether it's as a deep threat, a red zone target, or a spark for the quick passing game, Golden offers a lot of versatility. With his potential, he could easily become Jordan Love's go-to receiver for the foreseeable future.
