In re-signing linebacker Isaiah McDuffie and kicker Brandon McManus and signing guard Aaron Banks and cornerback Nate Hobbs, the Green Bay Packers have spent almost $150 million so far in free agency.
According to Over the Cap, the Packers -- as of Monday afternoon -- rank ninth in the NFL in spending at $148,300,00. The Packers also ranked tied for last in total number of players signed at just four -- Over the Cap tracks only contracts signed above $1.17 million per year in the total number.
The Packers have certainly spent, giving decent money to McDuffie, McManus and Hobbs while paying Banks near the top of the guard market. But once again, the team has selectively spent on only four total players, and the guaranteed money dished out has provided a layer of protection in a typically treacherous method of player acquisition.
Of the nearly $150 million spent by the Packers, just over $50 million has been guaranteed, which ranks 18th. In fact, the Packers are the only team in the top 10 of spending in free agency that hasn't guaranteed over 50 percent of the total value of the contracts.
In almost every veteran contract, the Packers only guarantee a signing bonus and then build in non-guaranteed roster bonuses as checkpoints of the contract.

The Packers have spent, handsomely, on four players while also staying selective in their process and protective in terms of guaranteed money provided.
We don't know if the Packers made the right decisions on re-signing McDuffie and McManus or signing Banks and Hobbs. In the end, the quality of the player matters most. But we can say the process was good in terms of how the Packers attacked free agency financially.
For what it's worth, the Minnesota Vikings are the current leaders in free agency spending at $245,700,00 across eight players. The Vikings have guaranteed over $142 million so far.
