Although nothing happened during the first week of free agency and into the new league year, the Green Bay Packers are still actively attempting to trade cornerback Jaire Alexander, per Rob Demovsky of ESPN.

Alexander remains on the Packers' roster as of Monday morning.

Despite the lack of movement, the divorce between player and team is likely a matter of when, not if. Not only did the Packers sign cornerback Nate Hobbs in free agency, but Demovsky reports the Packers have not approached Alexander about a pay cut and Alexander wouldn't accept one if offered.

Alexander, a two-time All-Pro who has missed at least 10 games in three of the last four seasons, is due $16.15 million in base salary in 2025. He has no more guaranteed money left in his deal, so the Packers can wait as long as it takes to find a trade partner, or simply release him if a trade isn't possible.

Releasing or trading Alexander before June 1 would save $6.8 million on the 2025 salary cap. A post-June 1 release or trade would add over $17 million to the Packers' cap in 2025 but transfer almost $8 million in dead money to the 2026 cap.

The Packers are in fine shape financially even after signing Hobbs and guard Aaron Banks, so there isn't a big incentive to move Alexander for immediate cap reasons.

The draft could be a pivot point in trade negotiations if the Packers are attempting to gain an extra 2025 pick. But teams might also want to wait until the draft is done before getting serious about adding a veteran player.

Alexander has over $34 million in non-guaranteed base salaries left on his deal, which runs through the 2026 season.

Alexander tore his PCL in late October of last year and eventually needed season-ending surgery.
