Upton will be the third right-handed corner outfield bat acquired by the Padres in the past couple of days when the trade is finalized, as the team has announced the Matt Kemp deal and is on the verge of announcing the three-team Wil Myers trade as well. Obviously, the Padres have more corner outfielders than spots available, so the defensive alignment they’ll deploy is up for debate. ESPN’s Buster Olney tweeted earlier that the Padres had decided weeks ago they were OK with playing Kemp in center field, if need be. Jon Heyman of CBS Sports hears (Twitter links) that Myers will likely be the one to handle center at Petco Park in 2015.

New Padres GM A.J. Preller has completely reshaped his club’s offense in about one week’s time with the agreements to acquire Kemp, Myers, Derek Norris and now Upton. The group will give the Friars a rare wealth of right-handed power — a much-needed change after the team finished last season with a collective .226/.292/.342 batting line and scored a Major League worst 535 runs.

WOW, the Padres are making some moves. Not sure if they will all pan out, but they are trying.

Amazing how 2 teams now couldn't find a way to tap into the incredible talent of J-Up... What the heck is it about him that has now made 2 teams cough him up? Wow...

Be interesting to see what the Pads gave up for him - he will be a free agent next year, and is due $14.5 this year.

Padres are making some moves. Completely re tooled offense. Norris, Kemp, Myers, Upton, and Middlebrook. They've also kept their pitching. They should have a big improvement.

He probably will never reach his potential, but he still would've been our 2nd best hitter last season.

Padres have a chance to have one of the more powerful outfields in MLB. Sucks for them that their park is pitcher-friendly.

They moved the fences in back in 2013. Maybe they will do it again

I think in the Braves case it is the pending free agency and trying to cut salary. I am sure they would rather move BJ Upton but unfortunately, no team would want him and his contract.

I get that... However, Upton has franchise player talent, on par, if not greater than guys like Jeter, Big Poppy, Pedroia, McCutchen, Posey, etc... Guys that you would want to build a franchise around. But for some reason, Upton doesn't seem to generate that type of interest...

Not looking good for the Dbacks. All the other teams in the division seem to be making bigger and better trades so far. LaRussa will turn the franchise around, but I personally think it will take a few years. Plus, seeing TL past, he loves bringing up players from within the organization

I liked Justin Upton when he was here and I thought we sold low on him. However, he's not on the same level as those guys mentioned. Well he might be on the same level as Pedroia, but I always thought he was a little overrated because he plays in Boston.

Other than Papi, those other guys play a premium defensive position that typically does not provide much offense. Right Field is important but the bar for a replacement level right fielder is and should be higher than a replacement level Shortstop, catcher or center fielder. That said, those guys all have talent but also have personalities. Jeter takes a lot of flack for his defense but he could have played any position on the field and been an all-star. Big Papi has been carrying that Boston team for 10 years. I love watching McCutchen on defense and at the plate. Posey is great too. These guys all have talent but they also have a narrative for being "leaders," "clutch," or any other superlative that the baseball writers want to provide for them. Unfortunately for Justin Upton, he doesn't get that type of press. His personality is not one to be in his teammates faces and it does not appear that he had a real good relationship with the Dbacks PR or the beat writers. Maybe he is just private or may be he is a jerk, we really won't know, but those other guys received a lot of leeway with the press.

Oh well. As far as San Diego, i have to say that I like what they are doing. If they even have a little bit of offense, their pitching should carry them. Last year they were in the bottom of the NL in Batting Average, On Base Percentage, and Slugging Percentage. They were also second in the NL in runs allowed per game, ERA, FIP. In games that they scored 4 or more runs they had 53 wins and 12 losses. I think they are going to be pretty good if they can keep that trend going.

Damn, how the hell did SD acquire all these big pieces without having to give up any ML starting pitching? Kemp, Myers & Upton will form one pretty good OF. Don't understand all the Upton not reaching his potential comments, he hit 29 HR's & 102 RBI's, that seems like the numbers we dreamed of him having here. Not sure what SD gave up for Upton but it had to be what was left of their Top 10 prospects, but the Padres farm system wasn't very good so all these trades were good moves. ARZ is not going to make the postseason for quite a while....buckle up fellow D'Back fans, we're gonna have to adopt the Cub mantra of "Wait 'til next year" for the next few years.

Its not like he is a bust, the guy has an .830 career OPS, the list of active outfielders with a better numbers than that is short and distinguished. He gets it held against him that he did not end up being the next Ken Griffrey Jr and is merely an on again off again all-star.

And I don't think the Braves moved him because they didn't like what he was doing. He was a victim of them slashing payroll and of the guys with 8 figure deals his probably was the one of most valuable and easiest to move. Like someone else said, I'm sure they would have preferred to move BJ instead but he is immovable.

I for one am not excited about the prospect of seeing him against us 19 times a year, a festering reminder of one of KT's dumbest moves.
