After a scary collision on Sunday night in a game against the Houston Astros, San Diego Padres star Luis Arraez has been shut down for the short term.
Arraez has entered concussion protocol, as was first reported by Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune, and he will be placed on the 7-day injured list.
In the first inning of Sunday's game, Arraez collided with Astros second baseman Mauricio Dubon while attempting to reach first base on a bunt. He was down on the ground for several minutes before being carted off the field and was later taken to a local hospital for evaluation, where his condition was deemed to be "stable."
While it seems Arraez dodged a serious injury, he will not be available for at least the next week as he undergoes further concussion evaluation.
The Arraez-Dubon collision was one of several we've seen in recent days in Major League Baseball, prompting calls from some fans for the league to add a safety bag at first base to promote player safety and avoid hard hits like these.
It's been a nice start to the 2025 season for Arraez, who is batting .287 with three home runs, seven RBI and five walks. He'll hope this setback doesn't keep him off the field for too long.
