The L.A. Times is reporting that after another terrific weekend of sell-out midnight shows in 33 locations, adding up to an astounding weekend take of $535 thousand, Oren Peli's independently-made low budget horror film Paranormal Activity will be given a full theatrical release by Paramount Pictures on October 9 in all of the cities where it's currently playing plus ten additional cities. This means that you won't have to stay up past midnight in order to see the movie for the first time since it opened for midnight screenings in select cities on September 25.

It sounds very much like Sam Raimi's Evil Dead, in that it was made on the cheap and personally marketed.

I love the way it's generating buzz, and the "Demand It" website is pure genius.

Has anyone seen this yet? It was playing at the new Cine Capri (Harkins Tempe Marketplace 16), but not anymore it would seem.

Interesting backstory on this movie, and the comparisons to Blair Witch are pretty good. This is a better movie than Blair Witch, though. But is it great? Not really. The acting isn't the greatest in the world and it is basically presented as a long home movie (like Blair Witch). It's good for what it is. And for the budget they had, it's a pretty good windfall for the filmmakers.

Which means these guys are going to get into any studio they want for their next pitch. Nothing gets you another movie like a low-budget winner. The problem is getting to the next level and getting a studio to commit a lot of money to your next project. Good luck to them, though.

Let's hope they don't go the way of the Blair Witch guys, who crashed and burned.

If I was one of these guys making a horror movie like this, I would immediately turn around and make another low-budget movie in a different genre. Who knows? This movie was made a few years ago, wonder what they've been doing since.

One of the stupidest movies I've ever seen. If I hadn't of gotten free tickets I would have asked for my money back. The so called "surprise" ending I was told it had was figured out in the first 10 minutes.

LOL someone told you there was a "surprise" ending? With all the comparisons to Blair Witch, you could probably get a 6-year-old to predict the ending. :D

I liked it a lot.

It was refreshing especially compared to the crappy Saw mimics that we are inundated with.

I prefer the horror movies that are not overly stylized. Its why the horror movies coming out of Asia were so good for about a ten year time span before they to fell into the overly stylized Hollywood versions of themselves. If this helps push Hollywood into making more "bump in the night" horror movies instead of the crappy gore/80's slasher remakes/rob zombie movies then I like the movie even more.

I think a lot of people wont like it though. Some may have gotten to far into the media's over hyping of it. Some may also be stuck in the rut of the genre of gore flicks Hollywood likes to call horror now.

I saw this and wish I hadn't. At no point did I buy rational people would stay in that house regardless of what they were told. Filmmakers failed to get my to suspend my disbelief, because I was constantly annoyed by the stupidity -- and gullibility -- of the characters.

I thought the movie was fun. There was too much day-time banter from the two actors and those scenes tended to drag like a home movie, but the night scenes were creepy. The best part was the girl standing above him and watching him for hours at night. I wasn't a big fan of the raptor foot prints in the white powder though.

I totally agree with you Joeshmo about the style of horror movies. The unknown is always scarier than some guy in make-up, mask or a CGI monster.

My girlfriend is now afraid to sleep with her leg exposed from under the sheet. :D

I really enjoyed it as well. Much better than any of the horror movies I've seen in awhile. The story between the two kept you interested and the guy was just funny enough to keep the ball rolling on this.

The audience experience was excellent as there were a lot of screams and whispers. Some dude behind me kept saying things like "WTF" and "holy sh**".

My one complaint is the ending. It was very, very cheesy after a well done movie IMO. I would have preferred they never come back up the stairs.

Or if she was going to toss him like she did, then how about walk forward grab his foot and drag him back to that utility closet?

The whole crawl to the camera and to the do the smile/attack thing was just lame.

They are coming out with a sequel.

I was kind of hoping they wouldn't. The low budget grittiness of the original was why it worked in the first place. Not sure if a bigger budget and most likely more stylized version would work. But if they keep to the "what is that shadow in the corner" type horror style then it has a chance. The trailer looks like they just might continue to follow that style. With the baby in the room standing up looking out of the crib, its pretty creepy.

I just watched it.

Overall, I liked it. The ending was a let-down. How in the world could that be a surprise ending? It was just the "natural" conclusion of what went on in the film. Pretty anti-climactic, IMO.

I wasn't a big fan of the raptor foot prints in the white powder though.
I think those were cloven prints. I kind of liked it.

I recently watched it.

One of the stupidest movies I've ever seen.

Indeed, awful. I kept waiting for the movie to start and then I realized this WAS the movie. Perhaps it could have qualified as OK if I actually cared for the characters, but they were totally unlikable.

Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat were reportedly paid just US$500 each for their performances. But due to the success of the film, the director, Katie and Micah are now renegotiating the amount.
They were overpaid. :D
