1. IND-Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford.
2. WAS-Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor
3. MIN-Matt Kalil, T, USC
4. CLE-Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama
5. TB-Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU
6. STL-Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame
7. JAX-Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma St.
8. MIA-Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M
9. CAR-Melvin Ingram, DE/OLB, South Carolina
10. BUF-Riley Reiff, T, Iowa
11. KC-David DeCastro, G, Stanford
12. SEA-Luke Keuchly, ILB, Boston College

The Cardinals are on the clock at #13---the #1 on their board, G David DeCastro has been taken, as have Luke Keuchly, Riley Reiff and Melvin Ingram---so the Cardinals are pondering their choices among the sliding DE Quinton Coples, OLB/DE Courtney Upshaw, T Cordy Glenn, S Mark Barron and CB Stephon Gilmore---

And then the phone rings---

It's Bill Belichick---

Belichick: "We will offer you the #27 and #31 picks for the #13 pick."

Cardinals: "Include T Sebastian Vollmer and it's a deal."

Belichick: "We won't move Vollmer. But I tell you what, Marcus Cannon, who is now 100% healthy played some at RT for us last year and he played well. We will include Cannon, but that would mean we would keep our #31 and give you our #48 instead."

Cardinals: "We are fine with Cannon, but If you want the deal it has to be Cannon plus the #27 and #31 picks, otherwise we are going to stay put."

Belichick: "Deal."

Cardinals: "Deal."

Roger Goodell: "There has been a trade with the #13 pick, the New England Patriots are now on the clock."

New York Jet fans: "BOOOOOOOOOO"....

Why the trade makes sense for the Cardinals:

1. The top three players on their board are gone.
2. They get a big, mauler-type RT in Marcus Cannon, who is now 100% healthy---and he is reunited with fellow Horned Frog Daryl Washington.
3. They recover the #2 they lost in the Kolb trade, and then some, by having two 1st round picks.
4. The Cardinals think that a now healthy Marcus Cannon is better than any other RT tackle prospect on their board.

Why the trade makes sense for the Patriots:

1. The ESPN crew will speculate that the Pats are trading up for Quinton Coples---but this is not the case. The player the Pats want? Mark Barron. Belichick also believes that Jerry Jones and the Cowboys are ready to pounce on Barron at #14, so he wants to trump right in.
2. Bilichick has been extremely frustrated with his safety play (for example, both the biggest Eli Manning plays that spurred the Giants' two Super Bowl wins over the Patriots were because the Pats' safeties were a step or two too late) and Belichick is certain that a dynamic safety will make all the difference. Barron fits their mold to a tee.
3. The Patriots still have 2 second round picks.
4. Cannon was not going to start for them because of their depth at tackle: Matt Light, Sebastian Vollmer and Nate Solder...plus they added Robert Gallery who can play tackle if need be.

13. NE (from AZ): Mark Barron, s, Alabama.
14. DAL: Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina.
15. PHI: Fletcher Cox, DE/DT, Mississippi St.
16. NYJ: Courtney Upshaw, OLB/DE, Alabama.
17. CIN: Stephon Gilmore, CB, South Carolina.
18. SD: Cordy Glenn, G/T, Georgia.
19. CHI: Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor
20. TEN: Whitney Mercilus, DE, Illinois
21. CIN: Stephen Hill, WR, Georgia Tech
22. CLE: Chandler Jones, DE, Syracuse.
23. DET: Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama.
24. PIT: Dontari Poe, NT, Memphis.
25. DEN: Coby Fleener, TE, Stanford.
26. HOU: Nick Perry, OLB/DE, USC
27. AZ:newcards:: Dont'a Hightower, LB, Alabama. Two time Captain at Alabama. Intense competitor who can clog the middle on running downs and rush the edge on passing downs. The Cardinals will start him at SILB next to Daryl Washington.
28. GB: Shea McLellin, OLB, Boise St.
29. BAL: Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin.
30. SF: Kevin Zeitler, G. Wisconsin.
31. AZ:newcards:: Lavonte David, LB/SS, Nebraska. This young man is dynamic and tremendously versatile because not only is he one of the very best tacklers in the draft, he can blanket TEs and RBs out of the backfield.
32. NYG: Jonathan Martin, T, Stanford.

80. AZ:newcards:: T.Y. Hilton, WR/RB, Florida International. Dynamic and electric---can take the ball the distance from the slot, wide or out of the backfield.

112. AZ:newcards:: Tyler Nielsen, SOLB, Iowa. Aggressive and athletic player who can set the edge and be effective in coverage.

151. AZ:newcards:: Mike Daniels, DT, Iowa. Daniels lacks height, but his motor and explosiveness are too good to pass up. Should earn some rotation time at 34 DE and as a situational inside pass rusher. He's very quick to the ball which is exactly what you want your inside rushers to be.

177. AZ:newcards:: Tom Compton, T, South Dakota. Small school player with a big sturdy frame and good feet.

185. AZ:newcards:: Omar Bolden, CB, Arizona St. This year's O'Brien Schofield---lots of talent when healthy.

221. AZ:newcards:: Kellen Moore, QB, Boise St. Fits the Cardinals short to intermediate timing oriented passing game.

Happy Patriots Day, everyone!

even without the OT, I'd love the trade. Definitely not holding my breath

Seems like an awful lot of compensation to move up to the middle of the first round - I wonder what the reaction would be if you posed this scenario on a Pats message board? And, do you think that teams above us like KC or SEA wouldn't jump at that trade if offered before we even got on the clock?

Mitch - Based on your 1 - 12 mock assumption, it's a pretty good deal with one exception - I'm not crazy about Lavonte David -

Two David write-ups chosen at random -

Pro Day - Stood on everything from the combine. He’s a player who has got first-round ability. It’s just going to be if people think he can hold up. He’ll probably be a second rounder because of size, but he’ll contribute.

Pro Football Draft Guide – Undersized WILL. Thrives in coverage. Small but rangy and extremely active. A WILL/safety tweener.

My impression is that he lacks size and physicality.

Why not draft Martin instead - he'd be a better value and less of a risk at #31 than he would be higher up in the draft and give us the option of replacing last year's (Keith and L Brown) OT tandem with one consisting of Cannon and Martin. Your upgraded draft grab-bag would then look like: Hightower, Martin, Hilton, Neilsen, Daniels, Compton, Bolden and Moore (though I'd prefer Moore's battery-mate Shoemaker at #212).

Great question.

About KC---not sure if Belichick and Pioli are still trade buddies---if they are, you've got a great point. But, I think KC is hot on DeCastro just as we are and will want to stay put.

SEA would be ecstatic to find Keuchly at #12---not sure if they would trade down because of that.

I don't know about the Pats' message board---but i do know that Belichick could care less about what the fans on message boards think. He needs a stud safety and there is only one stud safety in the draft. Harrison Smith and Antonio Allen each have a good deal of positives---but neither has the total package or the tremendous leadership skills that Barron has.

Jeff---if you get a chance (same for anyone interested), go to YouTube and treat yourself (if you haven't already) to the tapes on Lavonte David. He is plenty physical---he will stack players up when he is in position to and has the chance, but he understands angles so well and, even better, what it takes to take out a RB at his legs. I have never seen a player get underneath to the RBs legs the way he does---and, on top of that---be a player who has outstanding cover skills and instincts for the ball and where it is going.

This kid can play SS in the NFL---he has all the tools. And he's such a good tackler he could play inside in the 34---and be the nickel LB too if you want him to cover the middle.

Imo, Jeff, one of the best 10 football players in this draft. This kid is a serious baller. And he is relentless---he will make 7 plays in a row for you.

Pointless exercise. Belicheat isn't going to be fleeced worse than Graves was fleeced by the Saints in that other draft because...well, he's Belicheat, and we have Graves. No one would make that trade. Pipe dream, heavy on the pipe.

I no longer think Tanneyhill will be in the top 10 or even 15. I think the talk about him is all smoke. He could not make it at QB originally and then became a receiver. Then he becomes a QB and has one good year. Basically he does not have much college experience at QB and could not make it as a QB originally.

So my usual response to any trade scenario that includes the Pats trading up - not gonna happen.

Having said that you make a good case for why Billicheat might consider doing this except that I'm sure he would rather sit still and take the ND kid at Safety. Yes Barron projects to be better but not enough for Billicheat to give up a precious (cue Schmegal) draft pick.

With these objections aside I like a lot of what you have done draft choice wise but would prefer McLellin over Hightower.

If I could pick them again---I think McLellin the right choice. Great call.

It could happen. I know for a fact the Turds want either Barron or Poe, mtl.

With Martin on the board at 32, I wouldn't see the Cards passing here. He was talked about legitimately as top 15 prospect six weeks ago. Upshaw as well.

Last comment. Who do you go with here if Hightower is off the board, say to the Steelers?

Who are your two selections?

I actually think, WBB, a combo of SOLB Shea McLellin (Boise St.) and ILB Lavonte David (Nebraska) would be fantastic---two great motors---join them up with Daryl Washington and Sam Acho and turn them loose. Lavonte David reminds me a great deal of another smaller sized ILB who can make tackles all over the field and cover TEs and RBs with great success---Patrick Willis.

Martin is a LT---and the Cardinals plan to keep Levi Brown at LT. Plus, Martin does not fit their mold, for right or for wrong.

Great work as always Mitch!! Your scenerio is not as far fetched as some may think. The Patriots need to find impact players and the constantly trading back philosophy has resulted in lots of draft picks, but outside of Gronk and Hernandez it hasn't resulted in a ton of impact players.

The Mark Barron idea is a great one. There are alot of connections between Belichek and Nick Saban. I wouldn't at all be surprised to see New England go after Alabama players. All of the Alabama defensive players fit the New England style (Barron, Upshaw, Hightower, Kirkpatrick) very well.

I'm with you on Donta Hightower. He is the ultimate down hill player and may be a better outside leverage rusher than inside backer.
