FOXBOROUGH — The Patriots have added another weapon to Drake Maye’s arsenal.

With the No. 38 overall pick early in the second round, New England drafted running back TreVeyon Henderson. A standout at Ohio State, Henderson has been lauded for his leadership and appears to fit the mold Mike Vrabel began forging with first-round pick Will Campbell. The fleet-footed Henderson is also one of the hardest-hitting blocking backs in the draft.

At 5-foot-10 and 202 pounds, Henderson averaged 7.1 yards per carry as a senior at Ohio State and didn’t lose a fumble during his four years there. As a Buckeye, Henderson went over the 1000-yard mark twice and ran for a total of 3,761 yards on 590 carries (6.7 yard average) and rushed for 42 touchdowns.

Henderson ran a 4.43 second 40-yard dash at the Combine and NFL Media’s Daniel Jeremiah had Henderson as his 32nd best prospect in the draft.

“Henderson is a muscled-up runner with elite speed and versatility,” Jeremiah writes. “He is patient to the hole before exploding through with high knees. He has long speed to destroy pursuit angles once he gets into the open field. He needs to improve his contact balance, though. Too often, his feet stop when met at or near the line of scrimmage. He has the lower-body strength to power through if he keeps driving his feet.

“In the passing game, he runs a wide variety of routes with quickness and savvy. He has strong, reliable hands. He’s an elite pass protector. He is quick to identify blitzers and attack them. He strains to finish, sometimes well after the ball has been caught down the field. Overall, Henderson is a three-down weapon, brimming with big-play potential.”

Henderson joins Rhamondre Stevenson and Antonio Gibson in the Patriots backfield. It’ll be fascinating to see how carries are divided between Henderson and Stevenson, as the veteran struggled with fumbling problems in 2024, but has a 1000-yard season on his resume.

The second-round pick was reliable in the passing game at Ohio State, too, catching 27 passes for 284 yards as a senior. All told, he finished with 77 receptions for 853 yards with the Buckeyes.
