A stunner: Patriots are releasing four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Stephon Gilmore, who was eligible to come off the Physically Unable to Perform List after Week 6, source tells ESPN.

Patriots were roughly $54,000 under the salary cap, needed to clear cap space and now will find themselves with an additional $5.8 million. Stephon Gilmore was in the last year of his contract, so New England doesn’t owe him any more money.

The market for Stephon Gilmore, the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2019, is expected to be robust. Multiple teams are expected to be interested, and the 31-year-old Gilmore should be recovered from his quad injury in the coming weeks.

Gilmore was open to taking a sweetened one-year deal, per source, much like he did a season ago. I've reached out to several of his teammates already this morning and none were aware. One responded, "damn, that's crazy." #Patriots

any possibility we pick him up? me likey
Keim would have to work a Hudson like trade, before he's officially released. If Gilmore hits the open market the top 3 teams, IMO, are Bucs, Ravens and Bills...and he'd probably choose any of those, before coming out West, unless the contract was stooooooopid high.

He apparently has friends all over the league including D Hop but no idea if we would be able to get him. I read that he and Swearinger are good friends and DJ wasn't exactly happy when he left Arizona

Is this what Bill and Brady discussed after the game? :D

“Coach look what’s happened to our secondary. Do me a solid…”

Over 30 CB who is coming off an injury, is not available to return until week 6, and wants a lot of money.

He doesn't help us vs the run. He doesn't help us rush the passer without a blitz. I would argue that Vance has shown he isn't going to adjust his scheme for individual players.

He would make our team better, definitely but I don't believe his impact will be worth the cost/risk.

I dont want him to go to a rival or the Bucs though.

Rams or Bucs get him and we might be screwed.

Gilmore was fed up with Patriots. I dont hold last year against him.

If he is willing to come out west, we need to be in the mix. We should be appealing with what he have going this year, and the fact that we don't have a high priced corner already, so we might be willing to pay.

If he goes to the Rams I will be pissed...but I think he will end up with Bucs simply because they have the biggest need and he knows TB12.

We need someone to add to our weak defensive line and let collins or tallejo play next to simmons

Geno Atkins is still available?

One of our bright spot (defensively) is the secondary considering the lack of pass rush

I think he is destined to go to the Bucs.

If he wants to screw his old employer...... Maybe Baltimore or Back to Buffalo.

My big worry is Seattle or the Rams though. I'm sure Keim and company will be talking to him though. But I would imagine that our money wont be right and the contract wont be long enough.

Yes geno Atkins is a free agent, must have something wrong, because he is too good to be unemployed
Even at 30% he is better then Zach Allen
Zach Allen looks like thz Isabella of the defensive line

The missing piece. I'd do it, but he might be too expensive. The one area lacking depth on this team is cornerback. With two games versus Seattle and a game against Dallas, Gilmore is just what the doctor ordered IMO. We only have $4.8 in cap space, but the Ravens have $13 million and GB has $8.8 million according to SporTrac.

An added benefit is that he likely brings a 4th or 5th round compensatory pick next April.
