Although their Randy Johnson trade with the Yankees looks to be going through, the Diamondbacks may encounter a significant snag in the Shawn Green acquisition.
Green will receive the $16 million due him in 2005, but the trouble could come in the form of the contract extension. For the trade to work, Green will have to agree to take a pay cut for 2006 and 2007 that could approach 50 percent.
The left-handed hitter's salary would be somewhere in the $8 million to $10 million range, which could be less than what he anticipated.
Green's agent has indicated Green's desire to play in Arizona. That eagerness may be tempered should Green and his agent react negatively to Arizona's request for the big pay cut.
If Green joins the Diamondbacks, he would be penciled in as the No. 5 hitter behind Luis Gonzalez and Troy Glaus.
If the extension with Green can't be agreed to, Arizona is prepared to walk away. The Diamondbacks would again focus their attention on Colorado Rockies free-agent outfielder Jeromy Burnitz.
