Artest
Indiana Pacers: The only thing louder than rumors of Ron Artest's demise in Indiana are the rumors of Ron Artest's rebirth in Indiana."Ronnie is an incredibly hard worker," Pacer President Larry Bird said in the Indianapolis Star. "I told him I wish I had him working out in the summer with me when I played. It would have been fun. I know he's gone through tough times here and there but he's got a ton of ability. And when you sit down and talk to him you just love the kid; it's incredible." The quote may have been reaction to a story run in the NY Post by Peter Vecsey saying that the Pacers were on the verge of trading the troublesome small forward to the Sonics for Brent Barry. "I'm just taking it day by day," Artest said. "People get fired, people get traded. Things like that are going to happen. Nobody's job is safe."
Golden State Warriors: The Golden State Warriors are pretty sure they made a trade this summer that put Nick Van Exel on their team. They're just not so sure that Van Exel has gotten the word since they haven't heard from him since. "We're in a position now where basically Nick has a contract and it's premature to have any kind of discussion," Warriors President Robert Rowell said in the Contra Costa Times. "He hasn't even put on a Warriors uniform yet." Van Exel is under contract for $10.9 million next season.
Detroit Pistons: The proposed trade between the Dallas Mavericks and Detroit Piston involving Chris Mills, Lindsey Hunter and Hubert Davis has been called off."We aren't doing anything," Piston President Dumars said in the Detroit News. "We are going to stand pat for now."
Martin
New Jersey Nets: Kenyon Martin can't do anything about his salary demands falling on deaf ears or trade rumors that never seem to go away but there is one thing that he can and will do. "I've got no choice, do I?" Martin said in the Newark Star Ledger. "I'll be there." Despite the off season turmoil, the Nets power forward said that he will join the team for training camp. Martin becomes a restricted free agent at the and of next season and he demanded that he be given a max contract extension valued at $87 million over six years. "If I could, I'd take out their checkbook and write my own check," Martin said. "But I don't think they're going to let me do that."
San Antonio Spurs: David Robinson (No. 50) will become only the third San Antonio Spur to have his number retired in a ceremony to take place on Nov. 10. "With all that he has accomplished -- both on and off the court -- David Robinson is the consummate professional athlete," Spurs chairman Peter Holt said in the San Antonio Express News. "David embodies everything the Spurs are about. All of us in the Spurs organization are so proud to be able to retire his jersey." The other three are George Gervin (No. 44), James Silas (No. 13) and Johnny Moore (No. 00).
Charlotte Bobcats: NBA veteran Bernie Bickerstaff is already working for the Charlotte Bobcats as the general manager for their WNBA team. But he wants more. "Whatever they need me to do in this organization, that's what I'll do," said Bickerstaff in the Charlotte Observer. "These are good, quality people I'm working with." Bickerstaff has already served as a coach (for the Sonics, Nuggets and Wizards) and GM (for the Nuggets) and wouldn't mind doing either for the Bobcats. "From what I understand, they'd probably need somebody to get them to a certain point," Bickerstaff said. "I'd be happy with that. We've got a chance to do some great things."
