Penn State hockey's Big Ten championship run came to an unfortunate end on Saturday night with an overtime loss at Ohio State in overtime of the Big Ten tournament semifinal. Ohio State's Gunnerwolfe Fontaine got into open space and slipped the game-winning puck between the legs of Penn State goaltender Arsenil Sergeev to send Ohio State to the Big Ten championship game and send Penn State packing.
Penn State took a 2-1 lead into the third period after scoring two goals in the second period. Ben Schoen and JJ Wiebusch each notched a goal to give the Nittany Lions a lead after a slow start in the first period put them in a hole.
In the third period, Ohio State's Nathan Lewis appeared to tie the game at 2-2, but the official waved it off, although the goal was confirmed following a review for a Penn State challenge for a major penalty.
Ohio State took a 3-2 lead moments later with a go-ahead goal from veteran Patrick Guzzo. Penn State had an answer though with forward Matt DiMarsico getting the equalizer with a little more than five minutes to play in the third period.
Ohio State will now move on to play for the Big Ten championship next Saturday in East Lansing against Big Ten no. 1 seed and regular season champion Michigan State. The Big Ten championship game will be held on March 22 and an automatic spot in the NCAA men's hockey tournament will be on the line.
Penn State will wait to see where they may land in the NCAA men's hockey tournament. They entered the Big Ten tournament with the nation's no. 11 ranking, and a run to the Big Ten semifinal should be enough to secure an expected spot in the bracket.
