So I have been working with Peoplesoft for the past six weeks or so at my new job. Pretty crazy stuff. I am learning to support Time and Labor in the HCM module. All my background prior to this was with Microsoft technologies, so this is quite different.

Anyone else familiar with Peoplesoft?

I work on front-end (user) support/maintenance on the General Ledger Module - sounds like you are working on the HR/Payroll Modules.

Most of the I/T staff that support our HR/Payroll module (which our company has been using since 1998) sit right by me.

Not familiar with the Peoplesoft product, but I have worked with SAP which is another Enterprise-wide giant software suite.

I spent a couple of days learning ABAP/4 so I could code stuff in German. Completlely forgot everything I was taught.

I used to support a Peoplesoft time keeping database...... not good times.

It was during the time when Peoplesoft was going through a merger and it was hard to get support

My last companies corporate office used it... Never heard a good word... from what they told me it is very dependent on tech support and offsite help and they are apparently really bad at it...

Functionality was just okay, so they said...

What's the problem?

It's a lot of stuff and I am guessing it is because of the scope and customization in place in this environment. Slow response time, poor UI and other violations of basic programming and development principles.

I came from the Microsoft world, so this Oracle stuff is maddening, especially when it comes to the lack of documentation, knowledge base material and quality training available.

Mostly, I just wanted to let off some steam. :)

Yeah, I hear you abomb. I have worked in IT for over 10 years both in consulting and in the corporate world, and I have seen too many times where companies over-customize packaged software and are later shocked that they can't upgrade and have other problems.

The whole idea behind packaged enterprise software is that you let the vendor identify best practices in the industry and you adapt to them and let them support you. Especially in routine areas like HR and General Ledger. If your business practices are so unique and give you a competitive advantage then don't mess with packaged software in that area.

Peoplesoft is a giant, steaming pile of ish. People bitch all they want about Microsoft, but their software works great most of the time.

I've never used a system in which, if you open more than one window and something is processing in window A, window B has to wait for A to finish (or likely crash) before it does anything.

I've never used a system that is so devoid of common, basic-ass MFing UI principles, such as pressing return activates the logical button.

I've never used a system that when you click "Back to search results", you get returned to a blank search page.

I've never used a system so heavily reliant on consultants and high-dollar experts to keep it running.

I've never used a system that requires so many detailed hot fixes and updates, that the admins are scheduling outages on a bi-monthly basis.

F Peoplesoft and f you Oracle.

Good day!

I want to be allowed in the server room just to see if it the servers are steamy or smell like feces as I imagine.

The servers are in CA which makes the crap even worse for me. You already know how long Oracle processes take.

Hmm - at my old company, we didn't have that many issues with Peoplesoft.

Been using peoplesoft for years at my company. Time entry.... HR documentation... Employee maintenance.

It is cumbersome, but effective for me.
