Pernell McPhee fined $17,363 for low hit on Carson Palmer

Sunday, when Palmer took a low hit from defensive end Pernell McPhee in the Cardinals’ win over the Bears, McPhee was flagged.

Now the NFL has also fined McPhee $17,363 for the hit on Palmer. NFL V.P. of officiating Dean Blandino said in his weekly officiating video that McPhee’s hit on Palmer was a textbook case of the forcible contact to a quarterback’s knee that the NFL is trying to prevent.

“Forcible contact to the knee area — this is a foul,” Blandino said. “Whether it’s just above the knee or on the knee, we aren’t going to nitpick that. If it’s in the knee area and it’s forcible, the defender drives his shoulder, his helmet, his body, his upper chest into that knee area or below, it’s going to be a foul. Now, if the defender is blocked or fouled into the contact and the contact is unavoidable, then it’s not a foul. This is a foul for roughing the passer.”
How is that a fine? That's like $20 to us.

Rashad got the same fine for his hit on Cutler, was it as bad?

That's actually a pretty big fine for a play on the field. RJ's was a helmet to helmet and with today's focus on concussions that was an easy call for that fine.

I'm fascinated by that number: 17,363. How did they come to this number?

Why not 18,000 or 17,500.

Odd price to put on a NFL starting QB's knees, legs and ankles

How about throwing that player out of the game plus the fine for intentional low hits to the leg?

That would send a stronger message.

It's all in the bargaining ...fines for hits. It's nothing for these guys. The hit was beyond bad. Players should be ejected when intent to injure is obvious. That play was one of them. It's not a percentage fine...just so you know.

I was surprised that he was not ejected. A fine worth a days pay IMO would be the minimum. Guys like that don't belong in the NFL.

I like how they review these types of plays in college, at least for helmet-to-helmet with the possibility of an ejection.
