PETERSBURG, W.Va. — Petersburg's arms held Tygarts Valley to just two hits, and the Vikings took advantage of 11 walks and five errors to roll 9-2 in their opener on Wednesday.

The Vikings (1-0) plated three runs in the first inning, and that was enough with Peyton Tingler limiting Tygarts Valley to two runs (one earned) on four hits with eight strikeouts to four walks over five innings of work.

Payton Metheny tossed two shutout innings of no-hit ball, fanning five, in relief to secure the Petersburg starter an opening-day victory.

Petersburg's offense had just one base hit through five innings, but it put seven runs on the scoreboard. A three-run fifth inning blew the game open.

Matthew McDonald hit a double for the Vikings, and Metheny scored twice.

Jaxon Drennen took the loss for Tygarts Valley.

Petersburg (1-0) hosts Hampshire on Friday at 5 p.m.
