Ha!

I did a little research and Savage (along with Ozzie Newsome) built the Ravens from the ground up to Super Bowl Champs. He has only been in CLE for less than a year.

Browns | Savage to remain with team
Fri, 30 Dec 2005 16:34:57 -0800

Scott Petrak reports Cleveland Browns senior vice president and general manager Phil Savage will remain with the team, despite reports that he would be fired. "Although it is our policy not to respond to rumors, in fairness to our fans, we felt it necessary to dispel them," Browns president and chief executive officer John Collins said on ClevelandBrowns.com. "It was unfortunate and very unfair to the organization and especially to our fans, but we are happy to put this behind us and focus on our game this Sunday and the busy offseason ahead."

Sources: Browns ready to fire GM Savage
ESPN.com news services

The Cleveland Browns plan to fire Senior VP and General Manager Phil Savage over "philosophical differences," primarily over salary-cap management issues, league sources tell ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

However, there are ongoing talks between Browns owner Randy Lerner, team president John Collins and Savage to try to reach a deal in which Savage would accept a reduced role and still keep a job with the team.

In that proposed new role, Savage would run the football personnel department, while an additional executive would be hired to manage the salary cap. Both would report to Collins.

Savage had resisted the proposed reduced role over the past several days, but there were talks late Friday afternoon to see if a compromise can be reached without Savage losing his job.

Collins has denied that the team plans to fire Savage, including through a statement on the team's Web site that said Savage "is and will continue to be our senior vice president and general manager."

Late Friday, Collins told the Associated Press: "Phil's not going anywhere. He hasn't been fired, and he's not going to be fired. There is no reduction of responsibility. There is no rift."

Mortensen, however, has confirmed the team's plan with several sources, and stands by his report.

Savage joined the Browns as senior vice president and general manager on Jan. 6, 2005. Savage spent the last nine seasons with the Baltimore Ravens organization, including the last two (2003-04) as the Ravens' director of player personnel, and is known throughout the NFL as one of the league's top talent evaluators. Savage, a 14-year veteran of the NFL, worked directly with Baltimore general manager Ozzie Newsome to oversee both college and pro scouting. Savage was named the Ravens' player personnel director in 2003.

In addition to his responsibilities of scouting collegiate players around the country, Savage was involved in many of the day-to-day operations of the team and negotiated contracts of late-round draft picks. In his nine years with the Ravens organization, Savage saw the franchise earn a 72-71-1 regular-season record, including three post-season appearances with a 5-2 record, and the highlight -- winning Super Bowl XXXV over the N.Y. Giants in 2000 after a 12-4 record.

Ray Anderson, the Atlanta Falcons' chief administration officer, has been named as a possible candidate to replace Savage. Anderson has had no direct contact with the Browns, but league sources say there has been third-party contact to gauge his interest in the job.

The Browns also have had discussions with Mike Keenan about taking a position in their business operations.

ESPN now reports that Savage was not fired, instead another VP was. What a cluster job on ESPN's and Cleveland's part. Nothing like floating out a firing into the public, gauging the reaction, and then changing your mind. First class organization!!

Browns' shakeup claims Collins, not Savage

By Len Pasquarelli
ESPN.com

There will be a shakeup in the Cleveland Browns' front office but it apparently will not involve general manager Phil Savage.

In a remarkable twist, sources confirmed Tuesday to ESPN.com that John Collins, who has served as Browns' team president since May 1, 2004, will not continue in that capacity. It is unclear whether Collins will remain with the team or perhaps move on to the corporate holdings company of owner Randy Lerner, as some other Cleveland officials have recently done.

There have been rumors, adamantly denied by Collins, that he preferred to move back to New York. Before joining the Cleveland franchise, Collins worked 15 years in the league office in a variety of positions. He is a New York native who spent much of his scholastic and professional life in the city.

How the Cleveland front office makeover will shake out when it is completed remains to be seen. But it appears that Savage, one of the league's most respected talent evaluators, will be part of the front office team.
Last week, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported that Savage would be fired because of "philosophical differences" with some members of the organization, and several sources confirmed that was the case. But the public reaction to the report was so strong, and the backlash so negative, it appears Browns officials reconsidered the move.

Collins said that the Browns' management team huddled on Friday night and "renewed [its] vows," but even then speculation swirled that Savage might still depart.

Why slam the Browns for ESPN's jumping the gun? Obviously Cleveland was going through the process of internal evaluation, nothing unusual with that. ESPN got wind of the mumblings and wanted a scoop... BUT, ESPN got it wrong. The Browns aren't at fault in this! Your assumptions seem to be as errant as those of ESPN.
