The impressive thing about this win streak is the quality of opponents the Coyotes have beaten. They beat Anaheim (1st in west), San Jose twice (5th in west), Carolina (Cup champs), and Atlanta (2nd in east). That is quite a tear, but there are still a couple more tough games next week with Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, and San Jose coming up. This is the best stretch of hockey this team has played since the Boucher streak and it is going to need to continue if the Coyotes want a shot at the 8th seed after starting the year 3-10.
Last night's game was a game where a month ago the Coyotes would have just folded in and given up. Cujo played horribly until the third and the team was in a 4-1 hole. Atlanta was really picking them apart with their forecheck and you could really see that Phoenix was tired. Doan had a great game with two goals and is starting to heat up after being a disappointment for much of the year. Nagy finally found the back of the net and Nolan has just been so amazingly clutch, scoring the goal to send it to overtime. Perreault, who may be the best value of all the vets in the NHL, scored such a brilliant goal in OT to win it, but it was set up by an unbelievable cross ice pass by Michalek. Michalek is quietly on pace for 43 points this year, which is pretty special for a second year guy who we got in exchange for two career minor leaguers.
Atlanta is a team that I think will do serious damage this year, maybe even go all the way. Even in the loss they exposed how slow the Coyotes are. Hossa and Kovalchuk is such a dangerous pair and showed it last night. Kovalchuk scored the best goal of the night when he broke through Morris and Jones for a blistering breakaway goal. They are for sure going to be contenders in the playoffs.
