Phoenix Suns star Devin Booker talked about several topics during his recent interview with the Arizona Republic as the disappointing 2024-25 season was winding down.

One of them was his future contract situation.

Booker just finished the first year of his four-year supermax deal for $220 million, but he’s eligible for a two-year extension for $149.8 million to sign this summer.

“I haven’t even thought about it to be honest,” Booker said April 3 about the extension. “It’s a great situation to be in, though. Longevity in this league. Every year you can get, somebody wants you for an extra year or two, that’s always a pleasure. You never know when the game is going to stop.”

The Suns finished 36-46 and failed to make the playoffs for the first time since the 2019-20 season. Their franchise player, Booker, is 28 years old, just finished his 10th NBA season and is in his prime.

Adding two more years to his current deal puts him at age 33 when the extension expires.

"I’ve been in long enough where I’ve watched some of my heroes and idols just slowly get out of the league, and you see how it hurts them,” Booker continued. “I don’t want to think about the day that I have to do that. It’s nice to be up for an extension.”

Considering team owner Mat Ishbia barking back at the idea of Booker being traded, the extension will be offered to the franchise’s all-time leading scorer.

ESPN has reported the Suns are expected to offer Booker the extension. Booker averaged 25.6 points and a career-high 7.1 assists this season in 75 games, the most he's played since his second NBA season in 2016-17 when he saw action in a career-best 78 games (all starts).

Booker shot 46.1% on the season, his lowest since his third NBA season when he made just 43.2% of his field goal attempts in 2017-18. He made only 33.2% of his 3s, which is down from his previous five seasons.

Booker was self-critical of his shot and much more after Phoenix lost April 9 to short-handed Oklahoma City, 123-112, at home. Booker didn't feel he imposed "his will" on opponents at a high enough level, nor was he vocal enough as a leader, but he was already looking forward to working on his game.

"I'll probably start open gym right after the season," Booker said.

Booker is due $53.1 million in 2025-26, $57 million in 2026-27 and $61 million in the fourth and final year of the max deal in 2027-28. If the Suns deal Kevin Durant as expected, the Suns could begin to work their way back under the second tax apron to build around Booker.

Bradley Beal has a no-trade clause in his contract and is due a total of $110.7 million in the final two years of his five-year, $251-million deal, with a player option ($57.1 million) on the final year in 2026-27.

The Suns were trying to find a landing spot for Beal while attempting to acquire Jimmy Butler in a trade before the 2025 deadline. The no-trade clause, plus the size of Beal's contract, will present ongoing challenges for the Suns if they seek to trade him.

Golden State ended up getting Butler, who has made an immediate impact with his new team. The Warriors improved to 24-7 with Butler after beating Memphis, 121-116, Tuesday, April 15, in the play-in tournament.

Earning the seventh seed, Golden State will play No. 2 seed Houston in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs.
