Valley View and Holy Cross will return to the Lehigh Valley, while Mountain View heads to Central Pennsylvania as the basketball teams continue their pursuit of PIAA championships.
All three teams are in action this weekend, with Mountain View (24-4), the District 2 champion, tipping off first at 6:30 p.m. against District 6 champion Berlin-Brothersvalley in the girls Class 2A semifinals Friday at Mechanicsburg High School.
Valley View (23-5), the District 2 champion, plays District 12 champion Devon Prep (20-4) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Parkland High School in the Class 4A boys bracket. The Cougars are back in the semifinals for the first time since back-to-back appearances in 1996 and 1997.
Holy Cross (25-4) is in the semifinals for the third consecutive season, but it is in a different classification. The Crusaders, the runner-up in District 2, play District 12 champion West Catholic (12-14) on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Parkland High School in the Class 3A boys playoffs.
Mountain View is playing in the state semifinals for the third straight season. The Lady Eagles reached the semifinals in Class 1A in 2023 and last season advanced to the Class 1A final. This season, the program bumped up to Class 2A because of an increase in enrollment and posted three wins by an average of 16.0 points per game. They have a state-playoff record of 10-2 in the last three seasons.
Berlin-Brothersvalley (25-2) defeated Bellwood-Antis, 70-38; District 3 champion York Catholic, 71-52; and Marian Catholic, the runner-up from District 11, 57-46, in the state playoffs this season.
The winner advances to the championship game that is March 27 at noon.
Valley View won six games in a row in the postseason, including last Friday’s win over Shamokin. The Cougars played Holy Ghost Prep and won, 60-56, to reach the program’s only state boys final in 1996. The following season, they lost to Susquehanna Twp., 71-53, in the semifinals.
Valley View coach Mike Kurpis was a senior guard on the 1996 team that reached the PIAA final.
Holy Cross, which is 32-16 all-time in the state playoffs, reached the semifinals for the sixth time since 2012. The Crusaders have a record of 2-3 all-time. Those five games were played in Class 2A.
This season, the Crusaders are playing in Class 3A because of the PIAA competition formula, which includes having success and transfers. Holy Cross’ wins in the semifinals came against Trinity, 53-39, in 2013, and Constitution, 78-66, last season.
Holy Cross played West Catholic in the past and won, 63-37, in the 2010 Class 2A second round.
