A star receiver who catches everything thrown his way can be a quarterback’s best friend. Just as Matthew Stafford, who has played with Calvin Johnson, Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua throughout his career.
Having two such receivers can be a game-changer, though. That’s what the Rams are hoping for with the addition of Davante Adams, who will step in alongside Nacua after signing a two-year deal with Los Angeles in free agency.
Adams was the unquestioned No. 1 receiver in Green Bay during his time with the Packers, as well as with the Raiders. With the Jets, he and Garrett Wilson were 1A and 1B, essentially becoming interchangeable as Aaron Rodgers’ top target in any given week.
Now with the Rams, Adams hopes that’s the case for himself and Nacua. He was on ESPN LA radio recently and when asked how defenses are going to stop him and Nacua, he didn’t have an answer.
“I don’t know. I was going to ask you the same question, honestly. It’s going to be tough, man,” he said.
Adams has seen firsthand how difficult it can be to defend a talented wide receiver tandem like the one in Los Angeles. He remembers when the Jets went to Miami to face the Dolphins and Jalen Ramsey didn’t know who to cover: Adams or Wilson?
“I had the pleasure of playing with Garrett Wilson out there in New York last year, similar to that situation, we go play in Miami and Jalen doesn’t know if he’s going to go with him or go with me,” Adams said. “If you want to follow one or follow the other, either way you’re going to pay. It’s going to be difficult. We actually have to put the work in and do everything that’s going to lead to us having that success, but on paper, it’s definitely going to be a hell of a test for the opposition.”
In that game against the Dolphins, Adams and Wilson had their best game as teammates. Adams caught nine passes for 109 yards and a target, while Wilson caught seven passes for 114 yards.
That’s the sort of dominance Adams hopes to replicate in Los Angeles.
“Both of us went out there and did our thing, so I'm hoping it’ll look similar with me and Puka,” he said.
In their 11 games together, Adams averaged 77.6 yards per game and Wilson averaged 64.9. They scored seven touchdowns each and combined for 1,958 yards receiving despite the Jets offense being lackluster all year.
Adams and Nacua should be the next Rams duo to each have 1,000 yards in a season, something that hasn't been done since Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods had 1,100-plus yards each in 2019. It's going to be fun watching these two stars work together in L.A. and provided they both stay healthy, Stafford is going to put up big numbers.
