Chiller Films Bites Piranha Remake
Source: Variety
June 7, 2005

Chiller Films has set up a deal to remake the 1978 Joe Dante-directed horror film Piranha, says Variety.

Chuck Russell is rewriting the script, using elements from spec script Killer Fish by Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger plus the original's script by John Sayles. The film is based on a story by Richard Robertson.

In the original Piranha, a prehistoric strain of the feisty fish is unleashed by a subterranean tremor in Arizona's Lake Havasu just as the college crowd shows up to frolic in the lake.

Russell (The Mask, Eraser, The Scorpion King) will decide whether or not to direct the film after he completes the rewrite. The movie will go into production this fall.

I hope this sets up a remake of Blood Beach. I loved it as a youth.

I loved the original movie Piranha, mainly because I was a Houston Oiler fan and Dan Pastorini was in the movie.

Piranha Remake to Surface
Source: Variety
October 27, 2005

French film company Wild Bunch will remake Pirahna, reports Variety. The company has a script for the project, written by Eraser and The Scorpion King director Chuck Russell.

Wild Bunch handled international sales on George A. Romero's Land of the Dead, flogging worldwide rights to Universal, and it distributed the film theatrically in France.

Budgeted at E16 million-E20 million ($19.3 million-$24.1 million) and produced by Chiller Films, Piranha will shoot in the U.S. in March or April. The cast is not yet in place.

In the original 1978 film, a particularly nasty prehistoric strain of the flesh-eating fish is unleashed in Arizona's Lake Havasu just as college kids come to party there.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Jerry O'Connell has joined the cast of The Weinstein Company's Piranha 3-D. Directed by Alexandre Aja, the action-thriller co-stars Elisabeth Shue, Adam Scott, Ving Rhames, Richard Dreyfuss and Jessica Szohr.

In the film, a sudden underwater tremor sets free scores of the prehistoric man-eating fish in Lake Victoria and an unlikely group of strangers must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food for the area's new razor-toothed residents. But our heroine (Shue) is seriously outnumbered, and with only one chance to save the lake and her family from totally being devoured, she must risk everything to destroy the aquatic carnivores herself.

Shooting starts next Monday at Lake Havasu, Arizona for a March 19, 2010 release.

God help me, I'm actually looking forward to this.
And after bashing every remake ever.
So this is what hypocrisy feels like.
Too bad it fits so nicely.

Is everything
Odds are this film will probably end after they figure out how to eletrocute all the fishies. However, since the heroine in a blonde, perhaps she'll try to set the lake on fire instead.

Maybe it'll end when they just decide they shouldn't go swimming in the lake anymore.

So, where were these fish before the tremor released them? Living for thousands of years underground?
