I think the Detriot Pistons as a whole team has a better chance to win the gold medal then the guys they are sending to Athens...

They have been working and playing together for about a year now, they give Team USA about 2 weeks to gel and find some sort of chemistry together.

Should the NBA just send the NBA championship team that won during an Olympic year to the games? It would be a true World Championship to say the least.

The major downfall I see is it would be unfair to have that team not get the same rest as the other teams during the off season.

Thoughts??

you answered your own question. It wouldn't be fair to the team, and I'm sure several of the players would not want to go to Athens. Wallace is going to be looking for a big contract. He wouldn't take the risk of injury.

It's an interesting idea however.

There was more time involved after the season, I think, but don't you guys remember when we sent the NBA Champions to play in the World Championships and our teams kicked A$$! It was sponsored by McDonald's I believe. I can't remember if we just played the Euro Champions, or if it was a small tourney. The Bulls were in it the last year I remember. :)

Its not a bad idea, if you could manage to shorten the NBA season during an Olympic year. Maybe it could be the substitute for the champ's preseason, for the next year.

Take the coach and the starters from this year's championship team. Let the coach fill out his bench with whoever he wants from around the league, and go ball.

I'd love to see it, but I can't imagine it will actually happen.

I've thought they should follow JCSunsfan's idea for years now... and it's looking like a better plan than ever. The problem with, which will probably become more severe, is that the NBA champion could have a number of starters who would play for other countries in the Olympics. Suppose the Spurs had won the title this year... Parker, Ginobili and Hedo would not be playing for the US team.
