Detroit's Nate Robertson was ejected in the bottom of the first inning after throwing his first pitch of the night behind Tampa Bay's Carl Crawford, apparently in retaliation for the Devil Rays' Scott Kazmir hitting Placido Polanco with his first pitch.
Robertson, who had been staked to a 4-0 lead, was immediately tossed by plate umpire Tim McClelland when the left-hander's pitch sailed several feet behind Crawford. Tigers manager Alan Trammell argued the ejection briefly while Franklyn German was summoned from the bullpen to replace Robertson.
Kazmir hit Polanco with the first pitch of the game, but McClelland did not issue a warning. The 21-year-old rookie went on to give up four runs and three hits in the inning. One of the runs scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded.
McClelland issued a warning to Kazmir before the start of the second inning.
