Pitchers getting hit

This might be a dumb question, but why don't pitchers wear batting helmets (or something similar) when they are on the mound? Would it really interfer with their pitching?

I ask because a Marlins pitcher just took a line drive off the side of his head. You'd think a harder helmet would help decrease the risk of a serious injury.

I imagine it would be too ungainly and awkward trying to do a windup with a heavy helmet on.

It just wouldn't be natural at all,most helmets fall off with any exagerated movement it would be a throw the ball pick up your helmet after every pitch situation. Its just a risk, a guy throws the ball 90+ every once in awhile they are going to get one back at them, I'm sure most pitchers that step foot on the field know the score, sometimes you just can't get out of the way.

Why does Olerud wear the hard hat again? I know its medical related, but can someone remind me?

He fell on a sidewalk or somethin and his head smashed. He has a soft spot on his head now and if he gets struck there w/ out the helmet it could cause serious damage.

j/k................Olerud had a brain aneurysm while in college, and cannot risk a blow to the head.
