The Philadelphia 76ers paid a visit to the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday afternoon looking to begin a 6-game road trip on the right foot. Once again, the Sixers were undermanned as they were missing their Big 3 as well as a slew of role players who are important to what they want to do. The same goes for the Mavericks who have been reeling since the big trade of Luka Doncic.
Despite missing so many pieces, the Sixers used a big third quarter to earn a 130-125 win to open the trip the right away. In his first game back in Dallas after being traded to Philadelphia at the deadline, Quentin Grimes scored 28 points and six assists to lead the Sixers to a win over his former Mavericks team.
Guerschon Yabusele added 14 points and six rebounds, Jalen Hood-Schifino scored a career-high 19 points, Jeff Dowtin Jr. added 14 points, Oshae Brissett had 13, and Ricky Council IV added 13 and 10 rebounds while Justin Edwards added 10.
Here are the player grades after the win:
It wasn’t a big offensive game for Butler in terms of his scoring, but he did do a good job of being able to get the Sixers going on the offensive end. He made some terrific plays with his passing while taking care of the basketball and he was tough on the defensive end in this one. The Sixers have to like what they have gotten from Butler in terms of another ball-handler since they acquired him in a deal at the deadline.
Grimes was moving well in this one. After missing a game due to an illness, the active guard made his return to Dallas and made some things happen. He was scoring off the dribble as he made an impact with his shot and set the tone a bit with his offensive production. He continues to make some good adjustments within the game as teams show him a lot of attention with him being at the top of scouting reports. He was aggressive attacking the basket and making things happen on the offensive end. He continues to be an efficient scoring machine for Philadelphia.
After having to miss a game due to a bothersome left ankle injury, Edwards did some good things in this one for the Sixers. His movement without the ball was impressive for a kid so young. He understands where to be on the floor and how to curl off screens to step into open jumpers in the mid-range which is a skill not a lot of players can master. He did a good job of that in this one.
One has to wonder if Council is just in his head at the moment. He got to his spots in this one, but had trouble converting on his open looks on the offensive end. He did a good job of using his sped and athleticism to get into the paint, but tried to do too much at times.
Yabusele played with a lot of heart in this one. In the midst of what has been a tough stretch for him whether it’s been due to fatigue or the bothersome right knee, he played well in this one. He was efficient on the offensive end of the floor and did some good things on the defensive end. He had a couple of hustle plays in this one to create some extra possessions for the Sixers. He also made some good defensive plays in this one and he was an overall positive player.
In his second game with the Sixers, Hood-Schifino gave Philadelphia a boost with his offensive game. He knocked down three triples in his initial stint as he found his shot early. He knocked down five triples on his way to a career-high in scoring for him. Overall, he had a fantastic performance for Philadelphia on both ends of the floor.
There is a lot to like about Brissett’s game. He is a physical player who can put the ball on the floor and attack the basket, but he also has a smooth shot as he can space the floor and make the opposition pay attention to him. He knocked down a 3 early in this one which allowed the Sixers to find some early rhythm. Overall, he made positive plays in all areas of the floor to make sure Philadelphia had success.
This was a solid performance for Reese. He hopped off the bench and immediately knocked down a couple of triples as he was able to get into a rhythm early. If he continues to show off his 3-point ability, he can carve out a space for himself in the future.
Once again, Dowtin hopped off the bench and provided some good offensive production. He just knows how to put the ball in the basket and he does it with a smooth game. The Mavericks had issues staying in front of him and they had to foul him in an effort to slow him down. He was particularly helpful in the second half as the Sixers expanded their lead over a hapless Mavs team.
In his second go-around with the Sixers after playing a game earlier in the season, Okeke got some early minutes in this one. He had a nice finish at the basket in his initial stint and he knocked down a big 3 in the fourth quarter to keep Dallas at bay.
