Richardson Gets Engaged, Gets New Team

Quentin Richardson is having a good week. Real good.
First, the 24-year-old asked R&B star and actress Brandy to marry him on Tuesday. Now the happy couple is packing up for their move to Phoenix after the Los Angeles Clippers gave their blessing on his proposed marriage to the Suns on Thursday.
“Man, I’m just ecstatic right now,” said Richardson, who signed an offer sheet with the Suns on July 14, giving the Clippers 15 days to match or decline the deal. “Just ecstatic and ready get the ball rolling and do what I do.
“I’m really excited about getting the chance to change the scenery, and us being out of L.A. with a chance to start fresh. She was very excited, too. When we got the call, she was standing right there next to me and she started jumping up and down, screaming and yelling.”
The Suns’ brass did its share of celebrating on the fourth floor of America West Arena, as well, after receiving the decision. Although most media reports out of L.A. speculated that they would match the offer, the Clippers completed a trade with the Nets for guard Kerry Kittles on Thursday morning and chose to allow Richardson to leave instead, as he had requested.
“I didn’t really know what to expect,” said the 6-5 guard, who averaged career-highs of 17.2 points and 6.4 boards this past season. “But I’ve really been anxious and ready for it to go down. I’m just glad that it worked out the way it did.”
Of course, Richardson, Brandy, Suns President Bryan Colangelo and Head Coach Mike D’Antoni weren’t the only ones happy that everything worked out. Suns forwards Amaré Stoudemire and Shawn Marion were also excited to hear they had a new teammate when the news reached them in Florida, where they are currently training with the U.S. Men’s Senior National Team for the 2004 Olympics.
According to People Magazine, Richardson proposed to Brandy at the Century Club in L.A. on Tuesday with an 11-and-a-half carat diamond ring.
“He'll bring some athleticism, his all-around intensity, rebound positioning and his energy,” Marion said via cell phone Thursday night. “I know ‘Q.’ He's a cool guy.”
"I'm surprised they didn't match the deal, but I'm glad they didn't,” added Stoudemire. “I feel that's a great pick up for us. I think Q can help us a lot. He's going to be another rebounding-type guard and he's another guy that can stroke the ball from the outside.
“He's a hard worker, too, so that's the type of guy we need. I'm Mr. Hard Worker, so with Q coming, we can work hard together and make things happen.”
The feeling was more than mutual. Richardson told Suns.com that he can’t wait to play with “The Matrix,” Joe Johnson and, for the first time in his career, a star point guard in Steve Nash. But he’s particularly impressed with Stoudemire.
“That boy there is mean,” he said. “I call him Hell Boy. He doesn’t even know I call him that. That’s just what I call him. He’s so young, but he’s just the man.
“I love the situation in Phoenix. I like the group of guys we got and I feel like we have a real solid chance to win, and that’s what I’m all about. At the end of the day I want to win. I’ve been in the NBA for four years and I haven’t been to the playoffs yet.”
A trip to the postseason and a trip the altar. The newest member of the Phoenix Suns has a lot to look forward to.
“She's a great artist,” said Stoudemire of Richardson’s new fiancée, who will be sitting courtside at AWA this season. “That's huge he's ready for that commitment. I just want to say congratulations. I think by him proposing to get married and sign a new contract with us, that's big for him as a basketball player and a person. I'm sure he's feeling mighty high right now.”
