CAMBRIDGE − Plenty of talented high school baseball players have taken the diamond in the local area, and this season is no different with another strong crop of players.

With the new high school baseball season underway, the Daily Jeffersonian has a list of some of the Players to Watch on the diamond this season.

CAMBRIDGE: Dawson Geese, Mason Gregg and Garrett Carpenter

Cambridge head coach Jamaal Lowery can't help but smile entering the season with a pitching rotation comprised of three talented options in Geese, Gregg and Carpenter. Last year's Buckeye 8 Conference champions finished with a 14-7 record and are looking for more success on the diamond this season.

Geese compiled a 4-2 record on the mound last year with an impressive 1.37 ERA, with 71 K's in just 51 innings pitched. But Geese, who will hold down third base when not on the mound, also did his part offensively. He finished with a .300 batting average, with 6 doubles, 11 RBIs and an .405 on-base percentage.

Those numbers earned him plenty of postseason recognition with First Team Eastern District, First Team OVA and First Team Buckeye 8 honors last season.

Gregg was another strong option on the mound a year ago for Lowery, finishing with some equally impressive numbers on the mound. He had a 5-2 pitching record, with a strong ERA of 2.83 and 44 Ks in 42 innings pitched.

Gregg anchors the Bobcats' infield at shortstop when not on the mound and was also a contributor offensively with a .203 batting average, a double and 6 RBIs. He received Honorable Mention Eastern District recognition for his efforts last season.

An added boost this year for Cambridge is the return of Carpenter, who after a highly successful freshman season on the diamond missed last year after a football injury. His addition to the Cambridge pitching rotation gives Lowery three arms who could probably be No. 1 options on most area teams.

During his freshman season, Carpenter enjoyed a breakout first year with a 5-1 record on the mound and a 1.30 ERA in 32.1 innings pitched. At the plate, he put up strong numbers with a .327 average with 18 hits and 10 RBIs.

Carpenter will start at second base when not pitching, teaming up with Gregg to give the Bobcats a strong middle infield defense. Lowery also plans to hit him in the third spot in the Bobcats' batting order this season.

MEADOWBROOK: Kade Winnett, Gunner Davis and Cohen Miles

This trio of returning lettermen will be key components for Meadowbrook, which will be looking to bounce back from last season's disappointing 7-17 record. Head coach Sam Fondriest enters his sixth year guiding the Colts' program.

Winnett, a two-year letterman, anchored the Colts' defense at second base and burst onto the scene last season and was one of the best hitters in the MVL. He finished with a .300 batting average with 21 total hits, and for his efforts received First Team MVL and Eastern District honors a year ago.

Davis, a two-year letterman, has already committed to Muskingum University and brings experience to the Meadowbrook pitching staff with 14 career starts. Last year, he hurled 34 innings on the mound with 33 Ks along with hitting .269 with 18 hits en route to earning Honorable Mention MVL and Honorable Mention Eastern District accolades.

Miles, also a two-year letterman, has played a solid second base and provided a solid arm on the mound. He received Second Team Eastern District and Second Team MVL recognition a year ago with a .265 average with 19 hits. Miles worked 21 innings and collected 23 Ks for the Colts.

BUCKEYE TRAIL: Mason McQuain, Tyler Harrell and Tyeson Mercer

The Warriors return a veteran squad in a quest to capture their fourth-straight Inter-Valley Conference title under head coach Cory McQuain.

One of those key returning lettermen from last year's IVC champion team is McQuain, who earned First Team Eastern District and First Team IVC honors after putting up a .430 batting average with a .530 on base percentage last season.

Harrell returns behind the plate as Trail's three-year starting catcher who reeled in First Team Eastern District and Second Team IVC recognition. He finished last season with a .370 batting average along with a .520 OBP offensively and a 3-1 record on the mound with a 1.52 ERA.

Mercer, who transferred to Trail last year, made a solid impact with a 2-0 pitching record and a 1.20 ERA, along with a .275 batting aveage with a .320 OBP. Mercer adds a quality arm to the pitching staff and the versatility to play multiple positions.

JOHN GLENN: Justin Stambush, Wylee Woodard and Carter Merry

Stambush, a senior three-year returning letterman along with Woodard and Merry, will be counted on to turn around back-to-back tough years by the Muskies, which have gone 15-34 the previous two seasons.

Each had productive years at the plate along with filling spots on the pitching rotation for veteran John Glenn head coach Brad Barclay, who enters his 23rd year leading the Muskies' baseball program.

Woodard, a valuable senior utility player who can play several spots, finished with a .316 batting average, 24 hits, 5 doubles and 15 RBIs last season. On the mound, he saw limited opportunities a year ago but will be counted on this season to step into a bigger role.

Stambush brings the most experience on the mound, compiling a 1-2 record last year with a 3.82 ERA in nine appearances for the Muskies. Offensively, he finished with a .293 average with 17 hits with 11 RBIs.

Sophomore Merry had a solid freshman campaign seeing action in the infield, putting up a .290 average with 18 hits, 2 doubles, a home run and 11 RBIs. He also had limited pitching work with four appearances but did record his first varsity save.
