Plummer going back to Arizona?

Contributed by: Jim McAllister on 11/25/2006

Does Jake Plummer really want to return to the woeful Arizona Cardinals? Sportswriter Dan Bickley of The Arizona Republic reports in the November 25 edition of that fish wrap that a friend of Plummer in Arizona says that "the former Valley golden boy would likely be open to holding the clipboard in Arizona, spending the rest of his career backing up (Matt) Leinart." Can this possibly be true?

Let's take a look at the record: Jake is in his 4th year with the Broncos and although the team was 7-2 a couple of weeks ago, they have now slipped to 7-4 after two losses in 5 days. Even when winning, Jake wasn't getting much credit as the offense was usually anemic while the defense was doing most of the work. Jake has a young and anxious quarterback on the sidelines in Jay Cutler plus a lot of unhappy fans calling for his removal after the recent losses. Late yesterday Shanahan named Cutler as his starter for the upcoming Seattle game so could this be it for Jake?

It's understandable that Denverites expect a lot from their quarterbacks. I have watched a lot of guys take the snap from center, but if I had to list the number one all-time best, John Elway would have to be the man. Unfortunately, this is the perfection that Denver wants forever and it's easy to be spoiled with a guy like Elway. Why not? Those two Super Bowls were a lot of fun and although Plummer only had to replace the mediocre Brian Griese, the fans wanted him to be Elway-ish. Sorry, it just can't be that way, folks.

Jake Plummer will be 32 on December 19. He has had his share of injuries and at 6' 2" and 212 doesn't fit the mold of the modern NFL quarterback who is usually about 20 pounds heavier and 3 inches taller. In fact, I would question the 212 as he was about 185 while playing at Arizona State. His team's problems aren't entirely his fault as injuries have taken their toll on offense and defense. However, a quarterback has to please the fans and they are currently restless.

Plummer has a 40-18 record as a starter in Denver but it is a "What have you done for me lately" business. Maybe at 32 he is tired of getting beat up, both physically and mentally, and would like to return to the place of his greatest glory even if it is to the sorriest franchise in the NFL. He is a 10 year man with a ton of money, so, why not?

Hey if we don't overpay and it's clear Matt's the starter, I'd be fine with Jake as a backup.

If for no other reason than I think Jake can do some other things like hold on extra points and FG's. If Matt were to get hurt at least Jake has experience, if Warner wants to retire I was dreading having Navarre as the backup.

I guess I find it hard to believe Jake believes nobody else will make him a starter but that's certainly possible.

I can see it now. Jake stands on the sidelines on Dec. 19 at University of Phoenix stadium in a Broncos uniform as the crowd chants "We want you!".

Jake quietly says to himself, "I want you too."

Some teams will give him a chance to be the starter and pay him more money than the Cards. Additionally doesn't Warner have a 3 year contract and what would be the salary hit if you let him go??

This sickens me. I'd rather us spend a 5th round pick on some MAC or Big East QB.

Warner is hinting he wants to retire and if he does his salary comes off the books.

With Teams with tons of cap space, a weak Free agent class and several teams with major QB holes, this is all a pipe dream. someone will pony up a ton of moiney and land Plummer and it will not be the Cards.

It has been reported a few times that Warner is considering retirement.

Also, he did retire in my Madden season, so it must be true.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Jake Plummer is the best backup QB in the league.

It will be interesting to see how Cutler performs. My sense is that this year's O-line in Denver does not compare favourably with years' past. Their running game, by their usual standards, has been mediocre... and there relatively small size does not lend itself to effective pass blocking for a drop back passer. Cutler may be running for his life, but unlike Jake - won't be getting away very often.

Cutler is also pretty mobile. I think he'll get away from plenty....maybe he won't get out of the stickiest situations like Jake does, but he'll get away from a lot.

If Warner does indeed retire I would love to have Jake Plummer back as the #2 QB. Honestly watching Jake in the Broncos uniform over the past few years has been hard as he (to me) will always be an Arizona Cardinal.

Go Cards/America!

Hey he retired in mine also. Through week 13 the Cards are 12-1 and on their way to winning the superbowl! Leinart is leading candidate for rookie of the year and MVP. Ahead of James, Fitz, and Q!

I am in favor of Jake coming back. I always liked him sure he made some bonehead throws, but he did lead us to our first playoff victory in a while and he has experience. He played MVP like football (said by Steve Young) last year in the regular season. Plus he's a class act why not? I think Jake catches more crap than he should.

I hope he comes home if he doesn't get a starter's job. I alwasy hated seeing him in Denver uni anyway. Hell with Denver. Jake would be a fine backup.

If nothing else you sign jake and then tell Leinart "that's an example of how NOT to play NFL QB."

In such a QB-starved league, Plummer will be signed to compete, if not just be handed the starting job in the NFL.

Wherever he goes, I think he'll go into a QB competition situation and win the starting job in training camp.

...but he'll lose it by the bye.

That is true. There are still a lot of teams that need a decent QB. He'll get one or two more tries at starter, just like Warner did 2 years ago when the Giants signed him (and then the Cards). He'll get a good offer and that marriage will last 1/2 a season.
