A total of 18 people were injured in clashes between fans and police officers before and after the Europa League match between Athletic Bilbao and AS Roma on Thursday.

The Europa Press news agency and other media reported that 15 officers, two security staff and an Italian fan were among the injured, citing the police in the norther n Spanish city, who also said 14 people were arrested.

The clashes took place outside the Estadio San Mamés. The first trouble had already taken place in the afternoon at the entrances to the stadium when tensions arose between Italian fans and security staff, meaning police had to intervene.

The situation escalated again after the match when fans of both teams threw bottles, cups and other objects at the police.

According to police, only one of those arrested is still in police custody. The remaining 13 were released and will be summoned by the courts at a later date.

The home side progressed to the quarter-finals thanks to a 3-1 win. The Basques will face Rangers in April.

Roma had won the first leg 2-1 a week ago, but the Italians were weakened in the second leg in Bilbao by an early red card for Mats Hummels in the 11th minute.
