Polanski Will Erupt Pompeii
Source: Variety
February 2, 2007

Roman Polanski (The Pianist) will next direct Pompeii, a dramatic thriller set against the backdrop of Mt. Vesuvius just before and during its eruption, says Variety. The budget is projected to be $130 million.

The film is based on the bestseller of the same name by "Fatherland" novelist Robert Harris, who is writing the script. Filming will begin in Italy this summer.

The story's protagonist is a young engineer who has to repair an enormous aqueduct whose destruction threatens the Roman Empire. He finds himself enmeshed in politics and romance.

The film takes place over three days and the final act is the volcanic eruption and the destruction of the aqueduct, which stretched 60 miles and served hundreds of thousands of people.

I read the book last year prior to my trip to Pompeii. Pretty good book but Pompeii is just amazing, hard to believe how big that place was and how many people lived (and died) there. I want to go back there and spend a little more time exploring and see Herculaneum as well.

I look forward to the movie.

What can they do with $130 million budget that the Discovery Channel didn't do with their $3 million that would interest anyone?

What?
Isn't this kinda like Titanic? I mean it was a good movie but we just hope the sex scenes are good before the obvious happens?

Ha! I'm sure if that was the pitch when the idea first came up, the producers couldn't finish their sentence before the execs said, "Green light!"

If it's like the highest grossing movie of all time, you better believe they'd green light this one.
