I am needing an external hard drive. There are lots of ads for WD,toshiba, buffalo, etc. Just wondering what you all have and how well it works. I'm thinking 2TB, brand doesn't matter, using windows 7 pro.

2 TB? Are you trying to make a mirror of your home computer and OS?

I just use flash sticks to back up my outlook.pst and My Documents. It's cheap. I keep the software CD-ROMs in the extreme case where I would have to restore it.

ive had WD for years, love it. I use it for all my photos and music. Its getting full so I plan to buy another WD product that is larger, keep my photos on here as a seperate backup and move all music and photos to the new one.

A big external hard drive is a pretty cool resource. It's completely portable, and is so big that it can hold anything and everything. I've got one that has close to a thousand DVD's copied onto it, all the music I've ever owned, hundreds of books, all our pictures and home movies and scans of documents. I keep two copies updated of it, and keep one in a safe. It's awesome, and getting cheaper by the day.

I ended up going all out. I bought a Asustor AS-604t (NAS = Network Assist Storage) almost 2 years ago. It can hold up to 4 HDs. Right now I have 4 3TB drives(12TB total) in a RAID 5 array, meaning all 4 drives are synced together so if 1 or 2 hds go out(which one did just a week ago and I replaced it), I can replace them without losing data. With the RAID 5 setup, it brings the total space of all 12tb drives to 8tb.

I store everything on there, pictures, home videos, movies, documents, everything. I even have a portable WD 2TB hard drive tied into my NAS and use that as another backup just in case. With my network setup, I can grab all the info I store on my NAS from any computer/laptop/phone/PS3/Xbox/Ouya through my network. I can stream videos/movies from my consoles, TV, and phones off the NAS at anytime.
Another cool thing I did a few years ago was that download an app on my wife's and my android phones that will automatically sync my photos/videos off my wife's and my phones every night on to the NAS. So now I don't have to hook up my phone to my computer to download the pic/videos I took that day.

You don't have to go hog wild the way I did, you can take a 2TB drive and tie into your wireless router(if it has a USB connection) and do the same thing. I just like playing with network stuff.

To answer you question of which one to get, I have been a fan of WD drives for awhile. Go with any of them at any size and you can't go wrong.

My WD is making a lot of noise, I think its dying, ive had it for like 8+ years. I guess its time for a new one. I lose that drive I lose a LOT. Going to check tonight is my hard drive on the PC can at least hold all of the photos for the time being until I pick up a new drive. The music and etc is nice but the photos are my main concern.

I use a Seagate Free Agent GoFlex. 500 GB, but since I purchased mine a few years ago the newer models have increased capacity. Only facet I don't like is the Memeo software that came with it. It is now expired (WTH is that about) and I am nagged to purchase an annual subscription. I need to find a substitute "backup" software, preferably free.

The unit itself is just fine and has held up for 3 years.

Yea, I couldn't stand that either. One of the Segates I had I just decided to reformat and ended up getting ride of that and used the windows backup. To me that was just a bunch of bloat ware.
