Mar. 21—Portland High football coach Sean Green announced he is resigning in a letter posted on X on Friday afternoon. Green did not give a specific reason why he was resigning.

"After much thought and reflection, I've made the difficult decision to step down as Head Football Coach of Portland High School," Green wrote.

Green, 33, led Portland to the 2024 Class A title and a runner-up finish in 2023 in his two seasons as the Bulldogs' coach, compiling a 20-3 record (22-3 including wins in the Thanksgiving Day exhibition against Deering). In three seasons at Cape Elizabeth High (2019, 2021-22), Green's teams were 23-8, winning the Class C title in 2021 and playing in the C South title game in 2022.

In the letter Green thanked players, his coaching staff, school and administrative staff, and parents and booster groups for their support and dedication to a program with "a rich tradition," and credited his wife Julia for being "the true backbone of this journey."

Portland snapped a 22-year title drought when it beat Thornton Academy in convincing fashion, 35-14, at Fitzpatrick Stadium. The victory was the third against Thornton Academy in two seasons and one year removed from a 24-14 loss to Thornton in the 2023 championship. The 2023 title loss was Portland's fifth state championship loss since 2015, including a Class B setback to Skowhegan in 2022 under Green's predecessor Jason McLeod.

"Remember, no individual is bigger than the program," Green wrote. "What we've built together will continue. The players and coaches who come after me will carry the program forward, just as we've done, and continue to work toward even greater success."

Portland's 2024 title team, which went 10-2, featured a strong senior class and outstanding junior Cordell Jones, who has received several Division I football offers. Jones, senior quarterback Louis Thurston, and senior two-way starting tackles Anthony Tavares and Colin Kelly were named to the 2024 Varsity Maine Football All-State team.
