QB (2): Palmer, Stanton

* Gabbert now on the outside looking in following a shaky RW performance. However, will Stanton's improved play in camp translate over into the pre-season games?

RB (5): D. Johnson, K. Williams, C. Johnson, Logan, Penny

* Logan and Penny making their cases, Logan on STs and as situational RB and Penny as hammer RB and taking Stepfan Taylor's roles on STs.

WR (6): Fitzgerald, Jo. Brown, Nelson, Ja. Brown, Williams, Hogan

* With Dobson sidelined, Hogan and Golden have their chance. The edge goes to Hogan because of his great hands and physical strength, and the fact that he's under team control for 4 years.

TE (3): Gresham, Momah, Niklas

* Valles is making a charge and could supplant Momah or Niklas.

OL (9): Humphries, Iupati, Shipley, Boehm, Veldheer, Wetzel, Toner, D. Johnson, Holden

* BA had praise this week for Dorian Johnson and Will Holden.

DL (7): Rucker, Peters, Mauro, Nkemdiche, Gunter, X. Williams, Pierre

* Not a good showing from the starters versus the run. 2nd unit is looking more athletic and disruptive.

ILB (5): Bucannon, Dansby, Wright, Reddick, Martin

* Martin, for now gets the edge on newly signed veteran LB Philip Wheeler, because of STs. However, Wheeler could make a strong case the longer Deone Bucannon is on the PUP list.

OLB (4): Golden, C. Jones, J. Jones, K. Martin

* Question marks about the depth here as neither thus far in their careers has been a prolific pass rusher and Jarvis Jones is out with a quad injury.

CB (4): Peterson, Bethel, B. Williams, T. Williams

* Elie Bouka has to return from his injured ankle and then make his case. For now, he's on the outside looking in after the Tramon Williams signing. Props to Ronald Zamora who was on track to make the roster. With 8-9 months of rehab ahead of him he could be ready for camp next year.

S (5): Mathieu, Baker, Bethea, Branch, Gallon

* BA's praise for Gallon this week could have him on track to be a STs ace and SS backup. Harlan Miller and Rudy Ford have to find a way to beat out Tyvon Branch or CB Tramon Williams...and/or make a greater impact on STs and sub packages to beat out Gallon.

ST (3): Dawson, Wile, Brewer

* Matt Wile appears to have the edge over Richie Leone heading into the pre-season games.

No way Gallon is beating out Miller. The rest looks reasonable. Thanks for the write up Mitch.

I don't remember Arians saying anything positive or negative about Gallon. I'm pretty sure he has been hurt the past week, too. No way he makes it over Harlan.

After watching his team in three padded practices, coach Bruce Arians has been impressed with guard Dorian Johnson, linebacker Scooby Wright, safety Ironhead Gallon, safety Budda Baker, tackle Will Holden and defensive tackle Xavier Williams.

Had to be on the first day of pads. He hasn't been practicing the last week due to injury.

Mitch, two things, one related to your post and one not:
1. You said the 1st string DL had a tough day on Saturday. While true (probably), I've read that Peters and Rucker didn't play.
2. Problem at CB, and it's a big one (probably). I thought that we would have addressed the position in the last draft, but understand why we picked Baker, instead. Now looking ahead to next year's draft, I would think that rounds one and two will be spent on finding replacements for Carson and Larry, so CB probably has to wait until the 3rd round. Hopefully, there willl be a good one available in FA.

Peter king thinks Palmer plays next year too.

I dont think Stephen king really know something at this point, even carson doesn't know it
Many things can affect a decision after a year
Especially when the subject is a 39 years old qb with 5 children and 2 ACL and he wasnt even sure to play the current season

Can't be anything but stoked for Scooby. List looks good, I can't imagine BA keeping 5 RBs but Penny will end up on a 53 man somewhere else if it isn't here.

IMO we either keep 5 or let kerwynn williams go. We need a big back more than we need him IMO and he doesnt play ST well like Penny should.

I think with Palmer it's more of a process he goes through each year. Not having gone through the process, he could only be honest and say he didn't know if he would play. I think people read to much into it.

I don't believe he actually wanted to retire, or actually was contemplating it from the usual perspective. It's not a Brett Favre type thing.

As Palmer has said he wants to see if his body responds to the offseason mostly physically, but also mentally.

It's a year by year thing. If it doesn't respond, or something else, he'd retire. But he may want to play 2-3 more years if his body is willing and nothing else happens.

He still says he enjoys the mental aspect and preparation.

How long he actually plays no one and not even he knows until he reaches those days. Any year could be the one he's pushed out due to another injury, ineffectiveness, or the bottom falling out from this team.

I think we're going to have quite a few 40+ QB's in the coming years. We also have to remember that most of the guys hitting 40 around now (plus or minus a couple of years) are the first ones that played basically almost their entire careers under the protect-a-QB rules by the NFL. I think that might pay dividends to lengthen QB careers, and people like Brady are nuts for nutrition. Many of them are doing all sorts of things to try to extend careers.
