Premier League Awards: City comeback, Brilliant Barnes
Our Premier League Awards honour the best – and worst – of the weekend’s action, featuring Kevin De Bruyne, Harvey Barnes and Marco Asensio.
Moment of the Week
There’s little room for error in the race for Champions League football, perhaps the season’s one remaining area of jeopardy. Manchester City looked set to slip on a banana skin this weekend, as the champions trailed 2-0 at home to Crystal Palace. Familiar flaws were exposed at the Etihad, with the Eagles having a third disallowed for a marginal offside.
Fortunately, Kevin De Bruyne kickstarted his farewell tour with a throwback performance. The midfielder fired home a free-kick to halve the deficit, before assisting Omar Marmoush’s equaliser before half-time.
With the wind in their sails, City took control after the break to run out 5-2 winners. With every point crucial, this was a vital win. For a club with their recent success, a season outside the Champions League is unthinkable.
Player of the Week
Newcastle made light work of Manchester United at St James’ Park as the Magpies delivered for the absent Eddie Howe. The home side ran out 4-1 winners with a ruthless second-half showing from Harvey Barnes key.
Barnes has failed to nail down a regular role at Newcastle since his arrival from Leicester but has proven his class during the recent absence of Anthony Gordon.
The 27-year-old burst into the box to turn in Jacob Murphy’s cut-back for the second goal, before charging through the Manchester United backline to score a second. Barnes has now scored eight goals and provided three assists in the Premier League this season, despite starting just 10 games. It’s an average of a goal contribution every 106 minutes.
Goal of the Week
A superb pass and even better finish.
Ollie Watkins came off the bench to break Southampton’s resistance at St Mary’s, with the forward converting Youri Tielemans’ long pass on the stretch. It was a big moment for Villa, who kept alive their Champions League push with three goals inside the final 17 minutes.
An honourable mention for this Jadon Sancho strike. Chelsea needed a hero after trailing 2-0 to Ipswich and this equaliser was right out of the top-drawer.
Stat of the Week
Another week, another record for Mohamed Salah.
No player, ever, has produced more goals and assists in a 38-game Premier League season than Salah in 2024/25.

A week to forget for…
Marco Asensio has been a big hit since arriving at Aston Villa – but this weekend was one to forget for the on-loan Paris Saint-Germain winger.
Asensio made unwanted history after missing two penalties in the same game at Southampton, becoming just the fourth Premier League player to achieve that unwanted feat.
