Mar. 27—Softball The defending Class AAA state champions, University High, are off to a blazing start in 2025, with a 4-0 record and wins over Bridgeport, Wheeling Park, Allegany, and Wheeling Central.
The Hawks' latest win came after trailing 2-1 entering the sixth inning and scoring the go-ahead run late in the contest. In a 6-0 victory over Allegany on Tuesday, UHS pitcher Sophia Lehosit tossed a no-hitter with 14 strikeouts in seven innings.
The Morgantown Mohigans defeated John Marshall 6-4 to open their 2025 campaign, but they have lost four of their last six contests.
MHS is currently spending the week in Myrtle Beach, playing eight games in four days before heading home for a road trip to Linsly on March 31.
Trinity Christian sits 1-0 after a 12-0 victory over Valley. Paige Hopkins tossed five innings, allowing only two hits and earning nine strikeouts. She also went 2 for 2 at the plate with a pair of doubles.
Preston picked up a 5-4 win over Buckhannon-Upshur on Tuesday to improve to 1-1.
Baseball Morgantown earned a season-opening win over Class AA defending champion Frankfort 7-6 in the bottom of the eighth inning as Weston Mazey provided a walk-off single.
The Mohigans then defeated Parkersburg South 11-6 before losing a contest to Wheeling Park 6-5 on the road. MHS is currently in Huntington for a series of games against Cabell Midland, St. Albans, and Spring Valley.
University High fell to 1-4 on Tuesday, losing 7-5 to Linsly. The Hawks' lone win came against East Fairmont, 10-9. UHS will travel to Hampshire for a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
Trinity Christian improved to 4-1 with an 18-8 drubbing of Valley on Wednesday. The Warriors have scored 18 or more runs in three games already this season, with their lone loss coming by one run to Clay-Battelle, 7-6.
Preston stands at 2-1 after victories over Notre Dame and Lewis County, and a defeat to Buckhannon-Upshur.
Clay-Battelle won its third game in a row against Trinity Christian but dropped its latest contest 10-1 against Madonna on Wednesday to sit at 3-2 on the season.
Boys Lacrosse University High School opened its 2024 state title defense on Tuesday with a 14-1 win over Wheeling Central. Led by Nicholas Joseph with two goals and two assists, UHS also had Dane Wolfe, Maxwell Walker, and Will Harper with two goals each. Lucas Garman and Adam Argabrite added a goal each.
Track and field Over the weekend, the Morgantown boys and girls track and field teams dominated the field in Bristol, Virginia, bringing home titles in both competitions. Seth Wisman won gold in the high jump, long jump, discus, and 100-meter hurdles to become the only competitions 40-point scorer.
Emma Smith set the MHS girls' record in the high jump with a height of 5'6. MHS will head to the eastern panhandle for the Paul Arbogast Invite hosted by Spring Mills this weekend.
