Price for Bills’ Henry might be too steep for Cards

Travis Henry has interest in playing for the Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals have interest in him. Still, it is a long shot the Buffalo running back, looking for a trade now that Willis McGahee has won the starting job with the Bills, would ever land in the desert. The Bills gave Henry permission to find trade possibilities, since Henry has a year left on his contract. An NFL source confirmed Tuesday Henry is familiar with the Cards’ need for a running back and considers it a possible destination.

But the Bills want a draft pick in return. ESPN reported Buffalo wants a secondrounder, and that may be a steep price for a back who doesn’t have the speed coach Dennis Green covets at the position.

As for a possible trade for Henry, "we will look at it carefully," Green said during an interview with XTRA (910 AM) Tuesday.

But Green also acknowledged the draft is "very deep" with running backs. It seems more likely the Cardinals would rather draft a back or sign one as a free agent rather than give up a pick in a trade and give someone like Henry — or Denver’s Reuben Droughns, who has also been given permission to seek a trade — a huge contract extension.

FIRST SIGNINGS

The Cardinals began their offseason work Tuesday by signing a pair of free agents, inking tight end Aaron Golliday and wide receiver/kick returner Luke Powell.

Golliday was under new Cards offensive coordinator Keith Rowen last season in Kansas City when Rowen was the Chiefs’ tight ends coach, although he spent the season on the practice squad. The Cards need tight ends, with Freddie Jones heading into free agency and Lorenzo Diamond having a disappointing season.

Powell, cut by San Diego in training camp, was an All-American punt returner in college at Stanford.

EXTRA POINTS

Green shot down speculation that he might want to trade for Vikings receiver Randy Moss, who was drafted by Green in Minnesota.

"We wouldn’t be interested because we already have Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald," Green said. . . .

Green hinted if the Cards didn’t take a running back in the draft at No. 8 overall, they might look at a defensive tackle. ESPN draft expert Mel Kiper predicted in his first mock draft of the year the Cards would select Florida State defensive tackle Travis Johnson in the first round.

So is Travis Johnson about a ton of ass? He'd better be.

May be interesting, though, as he had to have played by Dockett when he was at FSU.

Johnson is listed between 290 and 301 and he played mainly NT at FSU. He backed up Womble who started next to Dockett most of his 4 years.

Johnson can play, not at all unsual at a school like Miami or FSU for a good player to be a backup much of his career because the guys in front of him are NFL prospects too. But Womble went undrafted and Johnson really is just starting to take off.

I've been reading a bunch about him today, everyone seems to describe him as similar to Dockett, essentially replaced Dockett.

Here's the NFLdraftblitz comments
Positives

- Travis is one of the top pass rushing DT's in the NCAA right now. He has a very fast first step, and wreaks havoc on interior offensive linemen. His primary responsibility is the same as his predecessor, Darnell Docket, collapse the pocket. Travis has made a big push this year with 17 tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks.

Weaknesses

- Travis is very one-dimensional. He has not shown that he can stop the run, or contain it really. His size is also a touch on the small side for a DT, and consequently can be pushed around by stronger Guards. Travis has also always been in a defensive line rotation, which leads people to question his durability over the course of a game. Travis has also had injury trouble in the past.

Overall Analysis

- Travis has undeniable physical skill, but has never truly put it all together. He has decent measureables, is sure to have some decent workout numbers with his quickness. Travis will need to add some weight to his frame though to be a regular contributor. I see Travis as a guy who would work best on a team that heavily rotates
it's defensive linemen, like the Colts.

The guy they say he reminds them of is Cletidus Hunt, doesn't strike me as the 8th pick in the draft. I wonder if Green is just trying to bluff some other team into taking a kid so the guy he really wants falls to him?

If the Bills stick to their asking price of a 2nd round pick, I doubt any team will pay it, especially the Cards. Free agency and the draft is going to be loaded with RB choices. Its a buyer's market. No way do they get a 2nd round pick. I think they'll come way down on that price.

Well, if he was Dockett's backup and not a ton of ass, then no thanks!

tangent but am I the only one who sometimes feels silly saying someone is too "small" when the guy is 6'5" 290 and could eat me for breakfast. :)

That said, johnson appears too small to make sense for us. Unless of course Green is still thinking he wants to move Dockett to DE in which case he could play King and Johnson at UT, get a bigger DT somewhere else. But I really hope that's not the case Dockett appears to me to be the PERFECT UT I don't want him at DE.

Thanks for the scouting report.
I really hope we don't waste the 8th pick on him. We don't need more players that can't stop the run.

Aren't we modeling our defense after that of the Dallas Cowboys, where bulk isn't a necessity amongst linemen but the ability to get up the field and disrupt running lanes is?

No way after reading that, Cards have Dockett, King and Bryant for that already. Shows what a ******** Mel Kiper is for saying the Cards will snatch him.

For an example of this look at the Bowl game vs. WVU. WVU rushed for 230 yards against FSU mostly between the tackles. I think this kid is very good but he doesnt fit what the Cardinals 'seem' to be trying to do on defense. He is more of a pass rushing DT not a run-stuffer at all.

Kiper has us passing on Derrick Johnson, Antrel Rolle and Heath Miller and taking Travis Johnson.

I will faint if that happens. :(

We need a big run stuffing DT. Overall he doesn't look like a number 8 pick anyway. Kiper must be smoking something.

What would be very interesting to know is just how much of our CAP money are the Bidwills going to make available to sign FA's. If they are going to hold back 7-8 million dollars once again then Graves and Green are not going to be able to do the many things many of them want or we expect them to do. I assume this type of information is very confidential but by now Graves and Green surely have a budget they have to work from. When Green dropped that little message on his radio show about having not spent 7 million of the CAP money last year was he sending a message to the Bidwills? I think he was. Our attendance was somewhat improved but maybe not enough to put the Cards in the black this past season. Great to have all this CAP room but useless if you do not use it.

About that unspend $7M last year. Some of that was targeted from the Boldin resigning, which of course got derailed by injured in training camp.

But, $3M of the cap not spent was caused by Green himself when he released Kendal at the beginning of train camp. By then, all the NFL talent that was worth that kind of money had been signed already and there was no one left that was worth the money.

I'm expecting that within reason, this year, the Cards will spend very close to the cap. Why? Because they need a good team heading into the new stadium in 2006. The better the Cards do this season, the higher the naming rights will be for the stadium, the higher the 1st year season tickets can be, and the higher the value of the luxery boxes will sell for. So, the more you spend this year on players the more they will get in return for the next few years as the 1st year will set a precedent.

I personally do not see any all out domingating DTs to rate the #8 (Hawthorne, Wisc and Cody,USC could make to the 2nd round; Wright, a Texas Jr., is good, but I do not know if he's coming out). Also, with Green's best available philosophy, I would'nt think Travis Johnson would be the pick. I think the Cards should spend some more time developing Wendall Bryant.
Now if we want to have a dominating DE corps, we should think about taking Marcus Spears. Derrick Johnson and Antrel Rolle would also fit the best available.

More time devolping Wendall? What like ten years? The guy is a bust. He is a first round draft pick who has 1.5 sacks over 3 freaking years. The only time the Cards need to spend on Wendall is the janitor sweeping out his locker after Green cuts his ass.
