New York Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner and his agent AJ Vaynerchuk are taking note of big contracts being handed out to cornerbacks around the NFL.
Last fall, Patrick Surtain II of the Denver Broncos and Jalen Ramsey of the Miami Dolphins reset the cornerback market, agreeing to extensions of $24 million per year and $24.1 million per year, respectively.
This March the ante was upped again as the Carolina Panthers and cornerback Jaycee Horn agreed to a contract extension worth $25 million per year, and soon after that the Houston Texans and Derek Stingley Jr. turned the market up another notch, agreeing to an extension worth a whopping $30 million per year.
Stingley Jr.'s recent extension is what Gardner and his agency most likely are eyeing for his next contract in the NFL, or something in the same realm. Both were selected in the same draft (2022) and were taken one after another, with Stingley Jr. going third overall and Gardner fourth overall.
For the Jets, they need to decide whether they want to pay a corner that kind of money while they are in a retooling phase with a new general manager, head coach, and quarterback.
Gardner was the Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2022, and was a First-Team All-Pro his first two seasons in the league. In his three-year career, Gardner has racked up 40 passes defensed to go with three interceptions.
Along with Gardner, Kansas City Chiefs corner Trent McDuffie and Buffalo Bills corner Christian Benford are entering their final contract year and are extension candidates who are eyeing the ever-increasing cornerback market of the NFL.
