Screen Gems Picks Up Priest
Source: Variety
March 8, 2005

Sony's Screen Gems has bought the spec script Priest by Cory Goodman, says Variety. Mike De Luca, Sam Raimi and Josh Donenwill produce the project, which does not have a director yet.

The vampire Western concerns a warrior priest who disobeys church law by teaming with a young sheriff and a priestess to track down a band of renegade vampires who have kidnapped his niece.

Raimi and Donen are producing via their new Sony-based company, which is separate from Raimi's other production entity, Ghost House Pictures.

Damn those renegade vampires. I have a question though: Aren't vampires supposed to do evil things? If a group of them does bad things, how are they renegades?

That being said, I'll see it. Even tghough I already saw Van Helsing. I hope the dialogue is better in Priest.

The story revolves around a legendary Warrior Priest (Paul Bettany) from the last Vampire War who now lives in obscurity among the other downtrodden human inhabitants in walled-in dystopian cities ruled by the Church. When his niece (Lily Collins) is abducted by a murderous pack of vampires, Priest breaks his sacred vows to venture out on an obsessive quest to find her before they turn her into one of them. He is joined on his crusade by his niece's boyfriend (Cam Gigandet), a trigger-fingered young wasteland sheriff, and a former Warrior Priestess (Maggie Q) who possesses otherworldly fighting skills.

This looks awful. I think I read it cost $60 million to make. Doubt it grosses anywhere near that number.

It certainly wasn't great. But it definitely had good entertainment value. The kid and I enjoyed it!
