There is sad news on the NFL front this Wednesday. Pro Football Hall of Famer Steve McMichael, who has been in a long battle with ALS, is entering hospice care.

Jarrett Payton, son of the late Chicago Bears Hall of Famer Walter Payton, announced it on social media.

WGN added to Payton's information saying McMichael is being removed from a ventilator in ICU and is being transferred to hospice care.

McMichael was one of the stalwarts as a defensive lineman on the great Bears team that won the Super Bowl in the 1985 season. In 13 seasons with Chicago, McMichael made the second-most sacks in franchise history (92.5) and set the club record for consecutive games played (191).

McMichael was diagnosed with ALS in January 2021. The 67-year-old has been bedridden and unable to speak. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August via the Seniors Committee. His wife Misty attended and accepted the honor for McMichael.

Four years ago today, I stood beside Steve McMichael as he bravely shared his #ALS diagnosis. Today, as he enters hospice care, I ask that you please keep Steve and his family in your prayers. Thank you. #Bearspic.twitter.com/XlLN9C6x1J

McMichael, 67, started his career with the New England Patriots in 1980 as a third-round pick out of Texas. He was signed as a free agent by the Bears in 1981. McMichael finished his career as a Green Bay Packer.

A larger than life character, McMichael went on to a career in professional wrestling with WCW.
