It's no secret we are a politically divided country these days, and these divisions certainly make their way down to the state level. But sometimes, even in times like these, people can still come together in unity... often over shared love of a team. That is the power of sports!

Such is the case in the Washington State Legislature, which is currently in the middle of their annual legislative session. The Evergreen State is facing plenty of issues, but our elected officials still managed to find time to work on some positivity for everyone... especially the 12th Man.

Representative Sharlett Mena, a Democrat representing the 29th Legislative District (south Tacoma down to Spanaway), introduced House Bill 1759 this session. HB 1759 would officially designate December 12th as the Official Day of the 12's in Washington State.

The 12th day of the 12th month... how fitting!

Washington recognizes 11 days that are official paid holidays, such as Christmas, Independence Day, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day. There are also 20 other days the Legislature recognizes, but aren't specific holidays. They are days to commemorate specific events or groups of people. If enacted into law, the Day of the 12's on December 12th would be the 21st special day the Legislature recognizes, not an official holiday.

HB 1759 sailed through the House of Representatives with overwhelming bipartisan support, passing with an impressive 93-3 margin with two members being excused from the vote. It now heads to the Senate, but before it can get a vote on the floor, it must pass through the Senate Committee on State Government, Tribal Affairs & Elections. This bill had a public hearing on Friday, March 14th, and is scheduled for an executive session this Friday, March 21st, at 10:30 am. The odds are looking good for this bill to pass the committee!

Seahawks Wire will continue to update the 12th Man on this piece of legislation in their honor.
