I have never heard one name pronounced so many different ways. If you go to the ESPN and NBA.com highlights for last night's game, it is pronounced two different ways--both wrong.

How can you be all-NBA third team and have your name mispronounced more often than not?

Drah g(hard g) itch-- btw.

At least a third of NBA commentators still pronounce "Nowitzki" with an English W. People either don't care, or are deaf, or both.

I'm not so sure about your first syllable. I thought the 'a' is pronounced more like the 'a' in apple rather than an ah sound. And yes, I listened multiple times to a Slovenian speaker saying his name but that was years ago.

I thought the 'r' was rolled along with the hard 'g', but a couple of notes...

Many of those Eastern European languages are hard to pronounce for Americans. The older you get the harder it can be.

When many of those Eastern Euro's migrated to the US way back when they also took on the American-English pronunciation over time.

Nowitzki pronounced with a W is odd to hear at times, but I don't think he cares or it really matters to him.

I think alot of people mis-pronounce his first name. Which is correctly pronoucned Go-ran. Not Gor-an.

But more important the correct pronounciation of Hornacek.
Horna-cek. Not Horna-check.

This causes me great annoyance and displeasure.:hammer:

The official NBA pronunciation guide has his name pronounced

GORE on DRAH gitch

I really hate when they try to turn him into a Frenchman and pronounce his name

DRAH zheek

I think you are incorrect about the first name. If you roll your r's it's even better.

One nice thing about Eastern European names (and languages in general) is that they are phonetic. Everything is pronounced exactly the way it's written. Once you know how each letter is pronounced, you'll never lose the game of "How you say that?" again.

Correct pronunciation of his name is "Go run" (say it as one word without any emphasis on anything.) His brother is "Zo run" (again- no emphasis on anything.) No need to actually roll any "R" sounds in his name either. You have to really say "R", but not like Gorrrrran Drrrrragic."

I think what you are catching is that the "on" is fully pronounced like the word "on" and not the way Americans typically do it in an un accented syllable as "en".
